CARLOS RECTOR PASSES AT 82: WAS SHERIFF Former Sheriff Carlos A. Rector, 82, died yesterday at a local hospital at 2:07 p.m. following a long period of declining health and a serious illness of two weeks. Both he and his brother, Hendrix, served as Sheriff of Greenville County, and Carlos served two seperate terms, once by election and once by appointment. His brother and he came out of the mountainous upper part of Greenville County and became formidable political figures, Hendrix being elected Sheriff in 1910 and serving until he was shot down on July 4, 1919, by Jake Gosnell, Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue, as a result of an old fued. Gosnell was tried twice, the first resulting in a mistrial and being acquitted the second time. Carlos was prevailed upon to make the race to succeed his brother and won over six opponents, including Capt. Sam D. Willis, who was wounded in France and who was appointed by Gov. Cooper to fill out the unexpired term of Hendrix Rector. Carlos served 1921 - 1925. Later he was appointed by the Governor to the fill the unexpired term of Sheriff Willis from June 1927 until January 1929, following Willis' death by gunfire. Mr. Rector was charged in connection with the death, but was acquitted. A negro man was convicted and served time. Mr. Rector also served as a Deputy Sheriff and as a Federal Revenue Enforcement Officer at several intervals. His more recent years have been spent quietly and happily as Custodian for Sans Souci Baptist Church. He was born in the Dark Corner of upper Greenville County, a son of the late John W. and Rebecca Barton Rector and came to Greenville 55 years ago. He was a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church and of the Men's Bible Class of the Sunday School. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dixie Harrison Rector, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. A. Boyd Turner and Dr. E. Buford Crain at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home today at 5 p.m. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery. Pallbearers will be Giles McDavid, Fred Grant, Grover Malone, Malcolm Floyd, Pride Batson and John Clark. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. today.
