The following was taken from a write up on the Stockport 1914-1918 website which is no longer available:
Alfred was the son of John and Alice Redfern of The Gables, Bramhall and the brother of Leigh who had been killed on 4 June 1915. Both brothers worked for the family brush manufacturing firm of James Redfern & Co, 75 Market Street, Manchester.
He enlisted into the army at Manchester at the beginning of 1915 and was assigned to the Cheshire Regiment (service number 34732). It is most probable that he did not go on active service until the summer of 1916 and, like many men who trained with the Cheshires and went overseas at that time, he was immediately transferred on arrival in France. The Borderers had suffered significant casualties during the early days of July in the fighting at the Battle of the Somme and would have been in desperate need of replacements.
On the day he was killed, Alfred and his new comrades were in positions at the village of Bazentin-le-Petit. The Battalion's War Diary records "Fairly heavy intermittent shelling during the day on both sides." And it seems reasonable to assume that Alfred became one of the victims of the German artillery. He has no known grave.
