Biography

Birth : Conflicting details are given of Felty's birth. He is variously reported, without sources, to have been born :

  • in 1748 in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.[1]
  • in 1750 in North Carolina,[2] which would make him very young to have been marrying in 1769.
  • in Wales, the son of William Reese (1709-1808) who settled in Iredell County.[3] This is known to be incorrect since Valentine is clearly identified by various sources as the son of Jacob Ries (d.c.1772) of Rowan, NC.[4][5][6]

Since Valentine himself is recorded in Rowan, NC in the early 1760's,[7] it is assumed he was an adult at that time and was born c.1740.

Immigration : Felty has not been identified in passenger lists, and so it is assumed that he travelled as a minor with his father (who may have arrived any time before 1761).

Marriage and children : Fellty Reese married Cristener Harmon on 6 Apr 1769 in Rowan, Province of North Carolina. Witnesses were John Harmon, Fraedrick Shouse, and Gideon Wright.[8] Felty and Christian had the following children :

  1. John Reece b.1770 [3]
  2. Jacob Reece b.1772 [3]
  3. Valentine Reece b.1774 [3]
  4. Hannah B Reece b.1776 [3]
  5. Anna Christina Reece
  6. Mary Reece b.1778 m. Jacob Wagner [3]
  7. Elizabeth Reece b.1786 [3]
  8. Isaac M. Reece b.1788 [3]
  9. Anthony Reece b.1790 [3]
  10. Daniel Reece [3]
  11. Susannah Reece

Land Records : Loose land transaction sheets of paper found at the North Carolina State Archives,[9] include land transactions in :

  • SCDB D: Page 205, 18 Feb. 1788, Valentine Reese to William Zachary for L 140, 136 A on S fork of Deep Creek, adj to Peter Sprinkle, being land granted by Granville to Jacob Reese on 20 Feb. 1761 and by his will to Valentine Reese. Wit: Henry Speer, William Hough, Simon Grose.
  • SCDB D: Page 204, dated 18 May 1789, [where] NC grant to William Zachary for 100 acres on N. Foprk of Deep Creek adj. to Peter Miers and Hudspeth.
  • Philty [Felty] Rease – Wilkes (now Watauga County, NC) Entered 1787, Issued 1789 for 200 acres on the N side of the New River and the S side of Howards Creek. of (now) Watauga County, NC : Know ye that we have granted unto Philty Rease two hundred acres in Wilkes County on the North side of the New River and South side of Howard’s Creek. Beginning at a white oak on Joseph Ayres line runs West with Hunts line fifty chains to a Spanish oak then North forty chains to a white oak at the creek then East down the meanders of sd creek to a stake in Ayres line. Thence South forty chains to the beginning. To hold to the said Philty Rease his heirs and __ forever. Dated the 18th day of May 1789. Signed S. Glasgow Secretary and Sam Johnston. [10]

Residence : Valentine is recorded in 1762 and 1768 Rowan County, NC.[7] Both Valentine and his father are mentioned in the records of the Moravian Church in North Carolina, which identify an "elder Riesen" in the Deep Creek area in 1765 and note that, after Jacob's death in 1772, his son Valentine continued the association with the church.[5][6] The family is believed to have moved later to Tennessee.

Death : He is reported to have died on 16 April 1814 and been buried in the Reece Family Cemetery in Trade, Johnson, TN.[1]

The will of Valentine Reese of Carter County, TN, was proven on 16 April 1814, which would suggest that he actually died some time earlier. The will names his wife as Christinnah. His youngest son, Daniel, is to receive "one sugar camp on Cove Creek, also 50 acres of land", and the rest of his property is to be divided equally between "my other children and Jordain". His sons John and Jacob were appointed executors, and witnesses were Abnor Smith, Jaret Arnold and Hugh Eggers.[3]

Research Notes

Birth Evidence is needed to confirm that he used the name Johann. All the records identified for him so far name him as Valentine or as Felty, but never as Johan. It is possible that he has been confused with one of several men named Johan Valentine Reis (rather than Ries) who were either born too late or who were not living in NC in the 1760's These include :

  • Joh. Valentin Reis who lived in Philadelphia in 1762.[11] Possibly the same Valentine Reece still in Philadelphia in 1774. [12] This is probably not Felty, who is supposed to have been in Rowan, NC by 1762.[7]
  • John Reis, named as the oldest son of Michael Reis of Tulpehocken, Berks County, PA, in probate papers for Michael's estate in Nov 1772. Michael's widow is named as Anna Maria, now the wife of Andreas Aulebach. Jacob Knoll married Catherine Reis, daughter of Michael. One of the witnesses is Jonas ap Dafydd, which may indicate Welsh connections.[13] This also is probably not Felty, since John appears to have stayed in Berks, PA.
  • Joannes Reiss; Event Date : 1758; Gender : Male; Birth Date : 13 Sep 1758; Christening Date : 14 Sep 1758; Christening Place : Cröv, Rheinland, Preußen, Germany; Father's Name : Joannis Jacobi Reiss; Mother's Name : Anna Maria[14]

Residence : Census substitutes for North Carolina record Vallentine Rees in Surry County in 1786 [15] and Ashe County in 1805 [16] and 1815,[17] some 70 miles north of Rowan County. Other sources record Valentine Rease, John Rease, Jacob Reece, and Anthony Rease in Ashe County, NC at the time of the 1800 US Census.[18] If these were Valentine's sons, it would indicate that the family moved north before leaving the state. Further research needed to confirm.

1800 : In Morgan, Ashe, NC : Volentine Reace.[19] Household includes :

1 male aged over 45
1 female aged over 45
1 male aged 16-25
1 male aged 10-15
1 male aged under 10
2 females aged 16-25
1 female aged 10-15
1 female aged under 10
Also on the 1800 census for Morgan, Ashe, are John Rease, Jacob Rece, and Anthony Rease.

There is no record for anyone by the Ries / Reece surname in Carter, TN in 1800 tax lists.[20]

1830 : In Carter, TN : Daniel Reese.[21] Household includes :

1 male aged 30-40 (presumably Daniel)
1 male aged 20-30
2 males aged 5-10
2 males aged under 5
1 female aged 70-80
1 female aged 40-50
1 female aged 20-30
1 female aged 10-15
Household next door is occupied by Jourdain Dodson, who is presumably the person mentioned in Valentine's will. A household nearby is headed by Jacob Reese and includes 1 male aged 60-70, 1 female aged 50-60, 1 male aged 20-30, 1 female aged 20-30 and 1 female aged 10-15.

Reese-1224 and Ries-1733 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate. No baptism record identified to confirm LNAB, but Reese is likely to be an anglicisation and merge should proceed to Ries as the likely original German spelling.

Please retain bio text from Reese-1224 which includes extensive sourcing.

Reece-2617 and Reese-1224 are not ready to be merged because: Profile for Reece-2617 appears to reflect details recorded for Reese-1224. Further research needed to determine whether Valentine had a daughter named Susanna, and, if so, who she married.

Reece-539 and Reese-1224 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for Johann Valentine Rees, husband of Christina Harmon, and father of Elizabeth b.1786 who married James Davis. Baptism record has not been located, but Reese is likely to be closer to original German spelling of LNAB, and so merge should proceed to Reese-1224. Reese-1224 is unsourced, and all details from Reece-539 should be retained.

Reece-1922 and Reece-539 appear to represent the same person because: they share a similar death date, the same parents, the same spouse, Christina, and the same son, Daniel.
