His mother died when he was two, after which his father remarried. He and his siblings were raised primarily on a farm in West Walworth; his father owned 90 acres of land at the 1850 census. Robert attended the Macedon Academy, a private co-ed Quaker secondary school.
He was appointed an overseer of highways of West Walworth in three separate years: 1898, 1901, and 1904. He was a Freemason and member of Walworth Lodge No. 254, F. & A. M.
Robert passed away on 13 August 1906 in West Walworth and is buried in Macedon Center Cemetery.
