Louisa Reed was born about 1838[1] in Barre[2], Massachusetts[1]. She was the child[1] of Melissa "Malisey" Newport and Charles Reed, the wife[2] of Henry Davis, and the sister of Civil War veterans Charles E. and Joseph W. Reed of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

In 1850, she is attending school, probably in or near Sterling, Massachusetts.[1]
