Biography

Moses was born about 1760 (his birth is an estimate). He is the son of John Reed (abt.1734-aft.1805) and his wife Mary (? - 1824).[1] He passed away before 1812.

Moses Reed acquires Land from Jacob Levee in Rowan, North Carolina in 1804.[2]

He was mentioned in his father John Reed’s Will of 1805: :5. I give & bequeath unto my son Moses Reed, the tract whereon I now live, from the line mentioned, before which is the Disoper [?] end, also all my sheeps but three, reserved for my wife, Mary Reed, also one sow to my wife, also all my cattle & hogs to Moses Reed, & my waggon to be equally for the use of both, Noah Reed & Moses Reed. [3]

Moses’ death date of 1812 is an estimate based on his probate and guardian records. His children were all under the age of twenty one when he died, and were taken into guardianship by various men as follows, from the court documents.

Guardianship Records

“Leonard Kaler, William Bear & Noah Parks are held and firmly bound … 11th day of August Anno Domini 1812…Leonard Kaler hath been this day … appointed Guardian to Jefferson Reid - orphan of Moses Reid deceased”

“John Reed Sr, Noah Reed & John Reid are held and firmly bound … 24th day of August Anno Domini 1816…John Reed Sr hath been this day … appointed Guardian to Thomas J Reid - orphan of Moses Reed’s deceased”

Accounts included in the documents confirm Thomas’ middle name as “Jefferson”. John Reed Sr appears to have taken over from Leonard Kaler as guardian to both Thomas Jefferson Reed and Caty Reed (see below) in 1816.

“Leonard Kaler, William Bear & Noah Parks are held and firmly bound … 11th day of August Anno Domini 1812…Leonard Kaler hath been this day … appointed Guardian to Caty Reid - orphan of Moses Reed’s deceased”

“John Reed Sr, Noah Reed & John Reid are held and firmly bound … 24th day of August Anno Domini 1816…John Reed Sr hath been this day … appointed Guardian to Catharine Reed - orphan of Moses Reed’s deceased”

Catherine was mostly referred to in the court documents as “Caty”

“David Cox, James Smith & David are held and firmly bound … 11th day of August Anno Domini 1812…David Cox hath been this day … appointed Guardian to Betsy Reid - orphan of Moses Reed’s deceased”

The guardianship is the only document in the court records mentioning Betsy. She doesn’t appear elsewhere in the accounts and may have died young.

“David Cox, James Smith & David Reid are held and firmly bound … 11th day of August Anno Domini 1812…David Cox hath been this day … appointed Guardian to Mary Reid - orphan of Moses Reed’s deceased”

“The principal and legacy of Mary Shepperd heir of Moses Reed [?] at the [?] of David Cox garden [sic] of said heir at February [?] in the year 1820 …$322.68”

It looks as if Mary Reid married and became Mary Shepperd some time between 1812 and 1820.

“David Cox, James Smith & David Reid are held and firmly bound … 11th day of August Anno Domini 1812…David Cox hath been this day … appointed Guardian to Green Reid - orphan of Moses Reed’s deceased”

Moses’ children were mentioned but not named in his mother Mary Reed’s Will of 1824: 2nd I will and bequeath unto my son Moses Reed Deas. or his heirs the sum of two dollars and fifty cents to be equally divided amongst them. [4]

Research Notes

  • David Cox was also guardian for Stephen Niles Porter and Lawrence Porter, They are included in the records with those of the Reed children and may be stepchildren of Moses, or other relatives for whom he was responsible.
  • He was able to inherit land from his father in 1805, so was over 21 at that time, hence certainly born before 1784.
  • His sibling Noah Reed is probably the man who married Ann Tomson on 19 Mar 1798 in Rowan, North Carolina.[5]
  • Noah Park married Anna Reed on 8 Aug 1767.[6] A Noah Parks is one of the guardianship witnesses above. It is likely that Anna is a relative of Moses.
  • Ann Park married David Reed on 20 Feb 1769 in Rowan County.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Moses by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Moses:
