Charles was born in Petworth on 22 April 1913 and baptised in St Mary's Church there on 25 May 1913. He was the son of William Reed and Annie Padwick. I have seen a photograph of Charles Reed in RAF uniform taken in 1941 at Christmas time. At present (2022), WW2 records are not available to the general public, but I do know that his RAF service number was 1246428 and that he was airborne, which I think meant that he had been trained for parachute landings into battle zones. On 16 April 1941, prior to joining the RAF, he had married Daisy Vera Violet Brooker, whom everyone knew as Vera, Charles and Vera lived in Oaklands in Northchapel, which was Vera’s family home. Vera’s father had bought the butcher’s shop in Northchapel which Charles and Vera later managed. Charles predeceased his wife and passed away on 10 March 1979, somewhere in Surrey, and Vera died in Northchapel ten years later.
