Biography
Donald was the son of Stanley Reed and Mary Tobe. He was born in Oasis, Millard, Utah[1] on December 25th, 1900 [2] [3]but the family had moved to Ely, White Pine, Nevada by 1909[4].
The 1910 Census [3]shows the family living in Ely, White Pine, Nevada and Donald is listed as 9 years old.
When he was 18, Don registered for the World War Draft in Ely on September 12, 1918. [2]. He was living in McGill, White Pine, Nevada and worked for Nevada Consolidated Copper Company which ran the copper smelter in McGill. He is listed as tall, with a slender build, blue eyes and light brown hair, with no physical deformities.
Don was called for a physical exam for the draft [5] but the Great War ended on November 11, 1918 before he could complete his exam and be drafted.
By 1920, Don was still living with his family in McGill, White Pine, Nevada. The census[6] shows him working as a Mill Man for the Cooper Mill. McGill was a company town, and all houses were rented only to employees of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company, or NCCC.
Don, age 22, married Nedda Veile, age 18, on June 27th, 1923[7]in Salt Lake City, Utah. His bride was from Fillmore, Millard, Utah where some of the Reed family were living. They were married by an elder of the LDS church, as Don and his family were descendants of LDS pioneers. The happy couple would have two sons, Stanley and Dean LeRoy Reed (1930-2018).
Their first child, Stanley Davis Reed, named after his paternal grandfather, was borin in White Pine, Nevada[8] on April 6, 1926.
By 1930, the census[9] Don and Nell were living in a rented company house for $15 per month while Don worked as a boiler maker for NCCC. They had added another son, Dean, who was 3 months old to the family, and Nell's mother Lois and sister Ona lived there as well. They also had a boarder, Steve Nicksik, who was an immigrant from Hungary living with them.
The 1940 Census[10] shows the family still in McGill, with Don working as a Boiler Maker, Nell keeping home and their two sons in school. Their next-door neighbor is Steve, their former boarder who now lives with his on wife and two young daughters.
Don once again registered for the Draft, this time on February 15, 1942 due to World War II.[1] He was still living in McGill, with his wife who is listed as his emergency contact. He is 5'11, weighing 155 lbs with blue eyes, blonde hair and a light complexion.
By 1945, the family had relocated to Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. His son Stanley registered for the draft in Portland[11], and lists his mother at 4320 SE 49th Ave, Portland as his emergency contact.
The family was listed in the 1950 Census[12] on April 5, 1950 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. Don and Nelda resided with their son Dean, and his wife Valreen. Don was a boiler maker in the metal trades, while Dean was an apprentice at a publishing company, and Valreen was a stenographer for the electric company. The census indicates that the family were at the same home (4320 SE 49th Ave) a year ago but does not tell us if they rented or owned the home.
Donald Leroy Reed died at age 62 on September 16, 1963, due to pulmonary failure and lung cancer. His death certificate indicated he was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.
