Biography

James Reed is a part of US Black heritage.

James was a Free Person of Color born about 1852 in North Carolina. He was the son of Zion Reed (1815-1916).

In the 1860 census James (age 8) was in Davis District, Wayne, North Carolina, United States. He was living in the household with Zion and Lucy Reed and his siblings.^[1]

In the 1870 census James (age 20) was in Nahunta, Wayne, North Carolina. Living in the household of Zion and Lucy Reed along with siblings.^[2]

In the early 1870s James moved to Louisiana. He married Mariah (Taylor) Reid (abt.1859-aft.1891).

In the 1880 census James (age 25), Laborer, was the married head of household in St. Charles, Louisiana. His wife, Mariah, and their two children were living in the household. Mariah's sister and her three children were also living in the household.^[3]

Research Notes

• The older children in James's family who have records reported that "Betsy" was their mother instead of the presumed Lucy who was the wife of Zion at the time of the 1860 U.S. Census and thereafter.

• No marriage records, birth records, or death records have been located. James and Mariah have not been located on census records after 1880.

• James and Mariah had at least two children, Eliza and Zion, who appeared on the 1880 U.S. census with them.
• There are two other children who may belong to them:
• Sarah Reid who was born in September of 1883 in Louisiana according to the 1900 U.S. Census where she appeared in her brother's household in Wayne County, North Carolina.^[4]
• And Allen Reid whose death record names James Reid and Mariah Taylor as his parents.^[5]

• Records indicate that all of James and Mariah's children migrated back to James's home state of North Carolina. No records have yet been found to locate James and Mariah after 1880 (aside from possible births in LA in 1883 and 1891).
