Biography

Josiah was born on 21 Nov 1731 in Windham, Windham, Connecticut Colony.^[1] He was the son of Thomas Reed and Esther Webb.^[2]

Josiah, the son of Thomas Reed, was baptized 21 Nov 1731 by Rev Thomas Clap.^[3]

Identity of Father

This Josiah appears to be the son of Thomas Read (1672-1749) who had Esther Webb as his second wife. Thomas Read who died in 1749 at Windham left a will written in 1747 in which he names his wife Esther and names his children from his two marriages (first to Rebekah Palmer and second to Esther Webb) including his son Josiah who is a minor. It appears that Esther Webb born 1703 is currently connected to the wrong Thomas as a spouse.^[4]

He married Eunice Kingsbury on 2 Jan 1755 in Windham, Connecticut.^[5][2][6][7]

He was killed by Indians in 1756 in a march from Fort Edward with Lieut Grant and party.^[2] Both the marriage of Josiah and Eunice and Josiah's death are in the Windham records, obtained from Vol 2, page 8.

Research Notes

According to the Kingsbury Genealogy, Eunice Kingsbury, daughter of Samuel Kingsbury and Dorcas Spalding married Josiah Reed of Windham on 3 Jan 1755 in Windham and that Josiah Reed was killed by Indians in 1756. This genealogy cites town records as the source. This means that this Josiah Reed and Eunice Kingsbury cannot be the parents of Samuel A Reed b. 1766 Pittstown, New York d. 17 Aug 1833.

A different Josiah Reed, the son of Josiah Reed and Elizabeth was born 15 Sep 1732 in Watertown, Massachusetts.^[9]

There are two Josiah Reed in the 1790 census for Pittstown, Albany County, New York. This Josiah^[10] has a household with 2 males over age 16 and 4 females. This Josiah^[11] has a household with 1 male over age 16 and 3 females.
