Biography

Harry Alexander Davis in his book “The Davis Family (Davies and David) in Wales and America: Genealogy of Morgan David of Pennsylvania” published a lengthy introduction to the family of Evan Davis on page 9 of his book.[1]

Evan (David) Davis Sr. was first married to Jane Rees on 12 January 1711 in Merion Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.[2]

Jane Rees, daughter of William Rees and Mary Lewis, was born about 1693 in Merion, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Evan David and Jane Rees had the following children:

  1. John David, born 1714, Merion Township, Pennsylvania; married Mary Tyson, October 1738; died 1779.
  2. David Davis, born November 1717, Merion Township, Pennsylvania; married Jane Miles, December 1738, New Castle, Delaware; died 1793, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
  3. Benjamin Davis, born 17 Jul 1719, Merion Township, Pennsylvania; married Rachel Port, 21 February 1748; died 27 September 1797, Queensborough, Craven, South Carolina.
  4. Evan David Jr., born 1722, Merion Township, Pennsylvania; married Mary Haughey, 1740; died about 1787.
  5. Child David was born in Nov 1723 in Merion Township, Pennsylvania. He died in December 1723 at the age of 1 month in Merion Township, Pennsylvania.

She died on 1 December 1723 at the age of 30 in New Castle County, Delaware. She left a will dated 4 January 1774.

After the unexpected death of his first wife, Jane Rees, Evan (David) Davis, Sr. married second, Jane Morgan in 1724 in New Castle, Delaware.[3]

Evan Davis left a will dated 21 August 1748 and died before the end of the year. His second wife, Jane Davis, a widow, and son, Thomas Davis, probated his will in 1748 (Wills, Lib. K1, fol. 168). [Will Book K1, page 168].[4]

Here is the abstract of his will: Evan David, Senior. Pen. Hd. Aug. 21, 1748._____, 1748. G. 207. Eldest son, John David; son, Joshua David; daug. Margaret; wife Jane David; son, Thomas. Exc. wife, Jane David; Son, Thomas David.
