*Malakofff, Henderson County, Texas was a coal mining town until about 1941. It had mined coal in 5 shaft mines and a strip pit mine. The strip pit mine was located north of Malakoff on Texas 198. The had two electric operated drag lines there in the pit. The large one stripped the dirt off the coal vein and the smaller one loaded the coal into gondola cars for transport to Trinidad to be used as fuel to generate electricity for Texas Power and Light company. Since the pit was quite low compared to the surrounding area, water was a problem. They had a night watchman shack in the pit and a watchman stayed there at night to watch things and as I recall man the pumps as needed. Where the water was pumped to, I have no idea. In the late 1930's, my grandfather, David Harrison Reese, had gotten too old to work in the mine, so they hired him as night watchman for the pits. I remember one night, I along with my brother, spent the night with Papa Reese in the shack. we went out with him on his rounds and came back to the shack where we caught a nap or two. I remember the old musty smell in the shack very well. I must have been 8 or 9 years old at the time. My brother was a little over a year younger than me. But we did have a good time out there. Of course, in the day time, we spent many hours over the years roaming over the hills of dirt, we called them mountians,
