Death Date

Some sources say that this Hugh Reese died 12 Dec 1783 in Columbia Co., Georgia, but they provide no evidence that he died on that date or that he was ever in Columbia Co., Georgia. If we had evidence that he died in Columbia Co., we could relate him to the Reese families of Columbia and Warren Counties. See Benjamin Rees and Hugh Reese.

Land Patent

In August 1743 Hugh Reece received a patent on 323 acres in Prince George Co., Virginia. The details can be seen at the website of the Library of Virginia (https://lva-virginia.libguides.com/land-grants as of March 2022). Highlight "Virginia Land Office patent and grants volumes" below the search box and search for a name.

There were two individuals named Hugh Rees/Reese in Dinwiddie County, Virginia in the late 1700's. One Hugh Rees/Reese evidently died in 1790. The one surviving Dinwiddie County Court Order Book from this period dated 1789-1791 has an entry in October 1790 regarding Isham and Jordan Reese being named executors for the estate of a Hugh Reese. Hugh Reese is also listed in tax records for Dinwiddie County from 1782-1790. A family letter in my possession says "My grandfather, Capt. In the Revolution, had four sons, Isham, Jordan, James, and Joseph. Isham, and Joseph were ME ministers." I believe the letter should read "My grandfather's brother, Hugh..." The grandfather being Thomas Reese who died in or about 1775 in Dinwiddie County. I also believe that the "Joseph" named in the letter is really "Josiah". The Isham Reese named above was born in 1748 and died in Georgia in 1816. There were also two Individuals named Isham Reese in that time period as well.
