Research Notes

Note: Miss Livermore's diary in the Essex Record office as quoted by Delores Dickson says that Elizabeth Reeve, daughter of Jonas Reeve and Elizabeth Reeve was married at Bocking Church on Monday October 21, 1793 to Mr. Lee who was an apprentice in the shop operated by Jonas and Elizabeth Reeve. It says the young couple are going to live in Hertfordshire to keep ship the ye cloth members of ye Revd Mr. Thorogood Church Bocking Meeting; -- I am uncertain what this all means but this is apparently the Elizabeth Reeve, born in 1774, who would be age 19 at the time. What happened to Mr. Lee I do not know, perhaps Miss Livermore misunderstood Worsley for Lee but Elizabeth appears in other records as Elizabeth Worsley so perhaps Lee died and she married again, this time ;to Mr. Worsley. I prefer the assumption that Miss Livermore misunderstood Worsley”for “was Lee”.  I note that Jonah Reeve named his son-in-law John Worsley as one of the executors of his will, in a codicil dated 27 February 1804. On this basis I have entered John Worsley as Elizabeth's husband. Administration of the estate was granted to Elizabeth Reeve, Joseph Reeve, John Worsly and Fisher Unwin on 23 September 1807. I assume the Jonah died a few weeks or months earlier in 1807. Her mother's will dated 6 March 1819 leaves the bulk of her estate to her eldest son Joseph and lesser amounts to many others, first of whom is Elizabeth Worsley, wife of John Worsley. The Kathleen Fry (Reeve) Day memorandum of 1958 has her death as 1845 and notes that she married John Worsley. The notes in the William Foster Reeve family history notebook seem to indicate that Elizabeth Reeve and John Worsly went to America; If this is correct then it would likely have been after her mother's will was made in 1819. More likely it is a mistake. She is noted in the Walpole Web Site family tree of Ian Nouwens with only name and birth information. He also omits reference to the first sister named Sophia; who must have died in childhood and to the married names of some other sisters.
