Sydney Walter Reeves always known as Syd, was born at 50 Hermit Road, Canning Town, London, England on March 6, 1808. He was the son of John Reeves and Annie Harvey Syd emigrated to Australia as a child with his family, in 1911 and returned to England with them in 1921 for an extended visit but within the year they returned to Australia where Syd married Joyce Turner. Like all of John Edward and Annie's family, Syd played a musical instrument. Syd was a member of the Black Cats Jazz Band in Kyogle. He played the saxophone but after losing a hand in the Second World War in Bougainville he played the cornet. He was band master of the Kyogle brass band for several years and always played at the dawn service on Anzac Day. In his teens years Syd was a successful bike rider and won awards. He moved from Kyogle in the late 50's to Engadine, a new suburb on the southern side of Sydney with a rapidly expanding population and became a Real Estate Agent. On retiring, he moved to Port Macquarie where, with his wife, he enjoyed golf and gardening and trips around the area. Syd died in Sydney, Australia on October 28, 1980 at the age of 72 and both he and his wife had their ashes were scattered at the summit of Nobby's Point overlooking the sea at Port Macquarie.
