Biography

William Walter Raleigh Reffitt was born 25 Feb 1877[1] in Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States. He is the son of William Reffitt & Lydia Anderson.[1] Note: His WWII draft says he was born in Menifee County,[2] all other records say Montgomery County.

  • In 1880 William Reffitt is living in Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States with his family. He is 4 and this is one of the few times you see him listed as William, his father is also named William, so he went by Walter Raleigh Reffitt most of his life. His father William who is listed as 31 born in Kentucky, cannot read or write. His mother Lydia who cannot write. The others in the home were siblings: James age 6 and A. Lincoln (John) age 3 months. [3]

He married Lillian Anderson about 1894. She was pregnant with her first child Mae. Walter was not the father. Lillie's father paid Walter to marry Lilly when so she would not be an unwed mother. Walter and Lilly were first cousins.

  • In 1900 Walter Reffitt and his family were living in Nicholas County, Kentucky with his family on a rented farm. Walter R was 22 working as a farm laborer and can read and write. Lillie his wife was 25 and cannot read and write she claims to have 3 children with 3 living but that was not accurate. The couple had daughter Pink Reffitt who was born 1895 and died 1896. The living children in the household were Mae H age 6, George W 3 and Ice L 2. [4]
  • In 1910 Walter and his family were living with his family in Jeffersonville Precinct, Montgomery County, Kentucky on a farm that he owns free of mortgage. Walter was 32 working as a farmer and could read and write. He and his wife Lillie have been married for 16 years, she is 37 and says she has 10 children with 9 living....(there were actually only 8 living at the time) she cannot read or write. The children in the house with them were May 16, George 12, Icy 11, Ally 9, Bertha 7, Ott 5, Earnest 3 and Henrietta 1. George was listed as a farmer and all of the children of school age could read and write. [5]
  • We have pictures and living people who knew Walter but his WWI draft card gives us a physical description of medium build, medium height, brown eyes and dark grey hair. [6]

Walter and Lillie Reffitt sold 50 acres of land near Jeffersonville to Boyd Jackson for $350 in 1915.[7]

Walter and Lilly Reffitt divorced. The divorce was filed in 1916 and finally completed in 1917.divorce proceedings here.

Walter Reffitt married Lilly Lovins 18 Jun 1917 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States. The marriage bond was signed by Walter Reffitt and Mart Wells 18 Jun 1917. He was 40 and she was 25, they were both divorced.[8] Walter's first wife was an arranged marriage and he was something of a rounder. He had a child Elmeath by Lilly America Lovins before his divorce from his first wife. He married Lillie America when their child was already several years old. He loved America very much and tragically she died in a home abortion. He buried her very near the house and built a little house over her grave.

  • A great deal can happen in 10 years. In the 1920 census Walter is living with his family on a farm that he owns in the Spencer Precinct. This farm would be on Pretty Run creek, later Pretty Run Road and eventually called Reffitt Road. Walter was 42 and his wife America who was 27. Since the last census Walter had divorced Lillie Anderson and married Lillie America Lovins. To make matters clear about the divorce, Walter and America had a child older than the last child of Walter and his wife Lillie Anderson. The children living with them George is 22, Allie 19, Aught 16, Earnest 13, Hernrietta 11, Elsie 9, Elmeath 7 and Raymond 6. Elmeath is the daughter of Lillie America Lovins, Walter's second wife but was born well before their marriage. Next door daughter Icy and her husband Millard Covey were living on a rented farm with their young son, I assume they are renting the farm from her father.[9]

Aside from running a large farm and a well-respected moonshine business. Walter was also employed by building roads. He owned a quarry on Pretty Run and the slate rock was used to build local roads. He continued this work into CCC times but the first newspaper article of him being paid for road work was in January of 1921. He received $7.50 for hauling gravel to Town Branch Road and $339.14 for running a work team and working on Pretty Run to Slate Creek Road.[10]

He married Ardell Willoughby. They were married by Earl Sneff in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States.[11] Ardell had only seen Walter twice before they married, He was 50 years old and she was 16 when they married.

  • In 1930 Walter and his family were living in Jeffersonville Precinct on a farm that he owns, the census says on Spruce Creek Road but that is because no road existed into where they lived, they used the creek called Pretty Run. The road that follows the creek now is called Reffitt road. Walter was 52 and working as a farmer. His 3rd wife is now in the picture Ardell was 18 in this year. Also in the house are children Raymond 17 from his first wife and Arrean 1 and 3 months from his third wife. Next door is Ott Reffitt, Walter's son and his family living on a rented farm, he was indeed renting from his father. [12]

Tobacco was a major crop of his farm. In December 1935 he sold 918 pounds of tobacco for $26.29.[13]

  • In 1940 Walter and his family were living in Jeffersonville Precinct on what was called at the time Jeffersonville Rt. 1, on a farm that he owns and was valued at $1000. Walter had completed the 6th grad and was 65 and not working, in fact he had some years prior had a stroke and also parkinsons. Living with him was his wife Ardell who was 27 and had completed the 8th grade. Daughter Arrean was 12 and had completed the 6th grade so far. Living next door was Earnest Reffitt, Walter's son living on a farm that he owned and purchased from his father. [14]

Walter Reffitt registered for the WWII draft 27 Apr 1942 in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States. He signed his name with an "x", he could read and write but he had a stroke and could no longer do so. He was described as 5'4", 150 pounds, gray eyes, gray hair and light complexion.[2]

  • In 1950 Walter Reffitt was living off of Science Ridge Road (Reffitt Road), Jeffersonville Precinct, Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States. He was 73 born in Kentucky. His wife Ardell was 37.[15]

Walter Reffitt died 6 Nov 1957 on Reffitt Road, Jeffersonville Precinct, Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States. The cause of death was coronary occlusion, sudden with a contributory of artier Sciontis with a duration of 10 years.[1]

He was buried 9 Nov 1957[1] in the Old Salem Cemetery[1] now called Lovely Amburgey Cemetery, Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States.[16]
