Biography

Notes from Merrill Reich sent to Elizabeth Harris in 1996:

1. Solomon REICH. Born 29 Jul 1800 in Salem, Stokes County, North Carolina. Died 11 Aug 1872 in West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois. Buried Aug 1872 in Reich Farm, West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois.

Member of the Moravian Church, but left the church before his death. Was buried on his farm which was later known as the Busefink farm. The Busefinks were neighbors of Solomon's and apparently acquired the land sometime after the death of Solomon's son Elias.

His trade was cabinetmaker; however, he had a large farm and made the bricks for his house. He also made bricks for others in the community.

Solomon left the Moravian Church in West Salem over a dispute concerning a contract to build a barn. As a result, he was not buried in the church cemetery, but on his farm. Sarah, his wife, was buried in the Moravian Cemetery. The Reich family cemetery is still to be found on the Reich farm near West Salem. The farm was in the possession of Jim and Sylvia Lynch in 1993, and they were maintaining the cemetery.

Solomon moved from Salem, NC, to Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas Co., OH, sometime before 1825, the year he married Sarah Davis. The date of his arrival in Gnadenhutten is not known, nor the reason for his leaving Salem. Gnadenhutten was a Moravian Mission dedicated to bringing Christianity to the Indians. The village was burned during the Revolution and was rebuilt in the 1820's. It is possible that Solomon was sent or volunteered to go there to help in the reconstruction. Land records of Tuscarawas Co. contain a number of transactions by Solomon and Sarah, the last being in 1844, when they were listed as being residents of Edwards Co., IL. This last transaction was the sale of land to Joel Davis, Sarah's brother. It is possible that Solomon moved to West Salem to help in the construction of a Moravian community there.
