He married Mary Howe (or Huie) in 1835 in Scotland. 
A few years later they emmigrated to the United States. 
They first lived in Ottawa where he worked as a stone mason on an aqueduct of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Their second son William was born while they were there.
They were the second couple after John Greenlees to come to the part of Illinois that would become the Scottish Settlement in Argyll.
"Leaving Scotland in 1837, they spent the winter at Ottawa and coming to the Armour claim in the spring of 1838, and occupied the Armour cabin. It was here that James S. Reid was born, being the first male child of the colony."
Hugh passed away in 1887.

Death of Hugh Reid
Hugh Reid, of Argyle, died at 4:30 this morning, from heart trouble, aged 84.
John Reid, of Rockford, and Wm. Reid, of Guilford, are brothers. James S. Reid and William Reid, of Argyle, are sons. One daughter, Margaret Reid, also survives. Funeral Saturday at one p. m. Deceased settled at Argyle in 1837.
