Christian was born on the 12th November 1816 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland the son of David Reid and Elizabeth (Barnard) Reid.

His Birth was registered at Dr Williams Library, Cripplegate a nonconformist Registry. The register states he was Christian, child of David Reid and Elizabeth, the daughter of Edward and Mary Barnard, was born on 12 November 1816 in All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.[1][2]
Christian's grandfather Christian Ker Reid was a silversmith having founded Reid and Sons and his father David Reid and uncles then inherited the firm when his grandfather died. Around this time, Christian John Reid, who had served his apprenticeship under his uncle, Christian Bruce Reid, became a junior partner.[3]
Christian married Mary Boosey on the 19th September 1840. The newspaper announcement was published in Newcastle, where he was from: Marriages - At London, on 19th inst., Mr C J Reid, Dean Street, in this town, to Mary, second daughter of Mr Boosey, Rodney Street, Pentonville, London.[4]
1851 Census on the 30th March 1851 Christian a goldsmith, was living in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland with his wife Mary and their children Elizabeth, Thomas, Walter, Charles and Harriet. Mary's aunt, Mary Boosey, was a visitor there.[5]

1861 Census on the 7th April 1861 Christian a goldsmith, was living at Prospect House, Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland with his wife Mary and their children Elizabeth, Thomas, Walter, Harriet, Anne and Caroline. Also living there were nephews Francis Reid aged 12 and Theodore Reid aged 8.[6]

Christian's father David Reid died in 1868 and the Newcastle Journal published a notice on Friday 27th March 1868 that named Edward Barnard, Christian John Reid and Edward Reid of Newcastle as the executors. (See David Reid for full text of the notice).[7]
1871 Census on the 2nd April 1871 Christian a silverplate chronometer watch manufacturer, was living in Oakfield Cottages, Benwell, Northumberland with his wife Mary and their children Walter, Harriet, Annie and Caroline.[8][9]

1881 Census on the 3rd April 1881 Christian a silversmith and a magistrate, was living in Benwell, Northumberland, with his wife Mary and their daughters Harriet and Caroline. Also staying there were Margaret Barnard aged 53, niece Sarah Barnard aged 15 and Effie Sandeman aged 10.[10]

Christian, of Newcastle upon Tyne and Oakfield, Benwell died aged 74 on the 19th April 1891 at Oakfield, Benwell, Northumberland.[12]
Probate of Christian's estate, £16774 15s. 10d., was proved on the 16th September 1891 in Newcastle upon Tyne and passed to his son Walter Cecil Reid a silversmith, and to John Watt Sandeman a civil engineer.[13]
