Biography

Ireland Native
Isaac Reid was born in Ireland.

Isaac Reid was born in Killevy, Newry, County Armagh, Ireland in or before 1814, the son of Thomas Reid and Catherine Stannard.

Age is an estimate. Isaac's immigration record and his headstone disagree. On arrival in Australia, November 1840, his birthday was recorded as 29th February, with his age on embarkation at 26 years. (1840 was a leap year). 1814 was not a leap year. 1812 and 1808 were. Headstone: being 67 in 1873 makes him born closer to 1806.

Marriage. By 1840, Isaac had married Mary Ann Revill.

Emigration to Colony of New South Wales. On 12th November 1840, Isaac arrived in Sydney on board the Argyleshire, accompanied by his wife and their eight-week-old son. The barque had left Liverpool on 16th July, and left the Cape of Good Hope on the 27th of September with merchandise, and 300 bounty emigrants. He and his family were brought out to the Colony by A. B. Smith, Esquire. [1] [2][3]

Isaac's immigrant record says he was 26 years old on 29th February 1840. A farm labourer, of 'Killevey', Co. Armagh, Ireland, he was the son of Thomas Reid, a Farmer, and Catherine Stannard, of Killevey.

His wife, Mary Reid, Dairy Woman, of the same place, was aged 25 years on 24th June 1840, and was the daughter of Robert Revill, a Farmer, and his wife Margaret (maiden name appears to be Bosh). Both were Protestants, in very good health and could read. Isaac could write as well.

Their son, born at sea, was eight weeks old on arrival. [4]

Children born in the Colony of New South Wales.

Accident. Unfortunately, 1873 proved to be Isaac's final year.

Charged with Cattle Stealing.

Evening News (Sydney, NSW) Friday 18 July 1873 - Page 2
At the Tambaroora Police Court, on Wednesday, 9th July, Isaac Reid, settler, of Macquarie River, was charged by Inspector Sanderson with having stolen cattle from Mr. Suttor's paddock, the property of Mr. Redfern, carcass butcher, Hill End. The evidence disclosed that Mr. Redfern, is the owner of cattle stations in various parts of the colony, and also carries on a large butchery in Hill End ; that he depastures a number of fat cattle in Mr. Suttor's paddock, which is not far from the defendant's residence ; bringing them in and killing them for his customers in numbers as required ; and some of the cattle had very mysteriously disappeared ; and that, suspecting that the defendant had appropriated them, he, Redfern, procured a search warrant, which Sergeant Ford and Constable Curl executed on Tuesday last, when they found a hide, identified as that of a beast which Mr. Redfern had missed from Suttor's paddock, concealed in defendant's garden. The defendant was thereupon immediately arrested and brought in and lodged in the lockup, and was brought before Mr. J. W. Lees, P.M., on Wednesday, and after the evidence of Sergeant Ford and Constable Curl had been taken, was remanded for the attendance of Mr. Redfern, until Saturday, 12th July. Inspector Sanderson successfully opposed an application for bail. The defendant is reputed to be a wealthy squatter, and on account of his age (over 60 years) and the respectability of his family, much sympathy is felt for both him and them. [6]

Death. Isaac died in Bathurst Gaol, from a heart attack on 6th September 1873, before sentence was passed.[7]
