Robert was baptized on April 4, 1777. His parents are listed as William and Isobell née Shaw.[1] He was recorded as an "Officer of Custom" in 1841,[2] and a "tide-waiter" (a customs inspector at a seaport who oversees the landing of goods from merchant vessels in order to secure payment of duties) in the 1851 census.[3]
