James Reid was born October 21, 1804 to Robert Reid and Mary Boyd Reid, in Fenwick, Ayrshire, Scotland. [1]
There are no other records pertaining to James until the year 1835. At this time, he is recorded as marrying Margaret Barr who also was born in Fenwick, Ayrshire, Scotland. [2]
When we next see James in the 1841 Census, he is the father of three sons, Robert, William and James. The family is still living in Fenwick, and an occupation of miller is listed on the report for James Reid. A brother of James is also residing with them at this time, Robert Reid who is 25 years old. [3]
By 1843, James is active in community policies by being an opposing signatory in the efforts to do away with the anti-corn laws. [4]
The 1851 Census reports James Reid as a farmer of 30 acres of land. The addition of four more children, Mary, Margaret, Jessie and Jannet round out his family. His brother Robert is no longer residing with the family. [5]
The last Census record for James Reid is 1861. With the birth of one more child, Agnes, he has also increased his farm to 39 acres and still lives in his hometown of Fenwick. [6]
James Reid’s death is recorded on November 1, 1863, just ten days after his 59th birthday.[7]
