George "Scotsman" Reid was born on about 28 August 1888. He was the son of Wilhelm Bretz and Martha Robertson Winter.
When he was a year old, the family emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand, departing from London, England on 22 September 1889 and arriving into Wellington on board the Kaikoura on 6 November 1889[1]. From there the family made their way to Auckland.
Once they settled in Auckland, his parents set up a fish shop and had more than one fishing vessel.
When the 1st world War broke out he may have enlisted on 22 November 1917, but because of an old hand injury he was discharged without seeing active service. Service Number: WW1 83529
George was working as a Quarryman in Napier in the Hawke's Bay when a large earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, struck at 10.47 a.m. on 3 February 1931. He was severely injured and died that same day at Dr. Gilroy's Hospital.
