Biography

Native of Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland

James Reid was born on the 24 May 1856 in the Market Town and Port of Dundee, within the eastern central Lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, which feeds into the North Sea, in Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland[1]. He was the son of Alexander Reid and Elizabeth Bain Scott.

At 5 years old, James, in 1861, lived with parents Rope Maker, Alexander (34) and Elizabeth (32), along with siblings Clara (12), Allison (7) and Robert (2) at 252 Perth Road, Liff, Second District of Dundee, Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland[2]. In 1871, Alexander (44) and Elizabeth (42), along with children, Power Loom Weaver, Clara (22); Millworkers, James (14) and Robert (11); Scholars, Alexander (8) and Mary (4) and Jane (2) and grandson and Clara's son, John (McNab) (1) had moved to 10 Step Row, in the Town of Dundee, District of St. Peter, in Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland[3].

On the 22 June 1877, Cab Driver, James (21) married Ann "Annie" Anderson (22) at 24 Todburn Lane, in Dundee, Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland. James resided at 9 Dunhope Street and Annie, at the place of the marriage, Todburn Lane in Dundee. They were married by Minister Alan (illegible) in front of witnesses John (Anderson) and Alison (Reid)[4]. The couple had one daughter during the marriage:--

  1. Jemima Reid (9 July 1882).

By 1881, even though he was married, Cabman, James (24) was back living with his parents Alexander (54) and Elizabeth (52). Their home was located at 2 Step Row, in the Town of Dundee, District of St. Peter, in Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland, along with siblings Machinist, Alison (27); Stableman, Alexander (18); Power Loom Weaver, Mary (14) and Scholars, Jane "Jean" (12) and David (9)[5]. However, in 1891, James (35), now working as a Mason, lived with "wife" Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Roberts) (28) and children Bella (3) and 6 months old James. They were lodging at 84 Saltmarket, in the City of Glasgow, District of Blackfriars, in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Lizzie was recorded as being born, around 1863, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire as were their two children. However, James was still married to Annie in 1891 and she was very much alive so it doesn't appear as if James and Elizabeth married[6].

In 1901, James (45) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (38) lived with children George (9), Charles (7), Nellie (4) and James (1) at 9 Mckechnie Street, in the City of Glasgow, District of Calton, in Lanarkshire, Scotland[7].

Research Note

However, the Reid family disappear from Scottish records after 1901 so perhaps they moved to another part of the United Kingdom or even overseas. More research is needed.
