John was born in 1887. He is the son of James Reid and Helen Mills.
His WWI draft card, dated 5 June 1917, lists him as being born in rock Hill, SC, employed by the city, Single with no dependents, and with previous National Guard Service for three years, and the ending rank of Sargent.
In the 1920 Census, he is listed as a border in the household of John J and Bessie M Jansson. Both James and John are listed as salesmen at a Grocery Store.
In the 1930 Census, he is listed as head of household, living with Fred and Mary Dunlap, their children, and Helen Dunlap, listed as James's sister.
In the 1940 Census, he is listed in the household of his sister Mayme Dunlap, along with her husband Fred, and their two children. also listed is Nell Reid, and both John B and Nell are listed as "Borders." James is listed as the proprietor of a florist shop.
(Both Nell and Helen are listed as bookkeepers, so I am assuming they are the same person, and the name was recorded incorrectly in the 1930 Census.
