Biography

James was born March 5, 1861.[1] His obituary says he was born in Hazleton, although various census records say he was born in New York. He passed away in March 24, 1919. .[1][2]

Timeline

  • 1870: A James Reilly, occupation brakeman, born 1851 in PA, living in Hazleton, with father John Reilly and mother Catherine. Also a brother, Owen Reilly. Mary Higgins also in the household.[3]
  • 1884: Estimated year James moved to Nanticoke
  • 1887: A James Reilly of Nanticoke is mentioned in the newspaper for a charge of desertion[4]

Research notes

James' death certificate says he is parents are Edward Reilly and Ann Cromer (Cramer?). However, his obit says he sister is Catherine (Reilly) McGeever of Scranton. Catherine's parents are listed on her death certificate as John Reilly and Mary Gibbons. It's unclear which, if any, is correct.

Obituary

Mine Injuries Result In Death

James Reilly, aged 68 years, a well known resident of West Green street, died at the Nanticoke State Hospital yesterday as the result of injuries sustained while at work Saturday in the mines of No; 2 shaft of the Susquehanna Collieries Company.

Deceased Was born in Hazleton, but for the past thirty-five years had made Nanticoke his home. He was a native member of St. Francis Church and also a member of the Holy Name Society, Beside his wife, he is survived by the following children. Edward, a member of the Aviation Corps, stationed at Dallas, Texas; Joseph, a member of the A. E. F.; John, at home; Anna, a nurse in the government service; Hannah, a teacher in the local schools, and Mary, at home. One sister, Mrs. Catherine McGeever, of Scranton. also survives. The funeral arrangements have not as yet been completed.
