Y-DNA testing of a direct male line descendant has verified a family story of a name change from Reilly to Gray, apparently following desertion from the British military during the Maori wars in NZ. As a result, it is not certain that his first name was James. His arrival in South Australia in 1876 with his wife and two eldest children is documented under the name James Gray.
