He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1852. They settled in Richmond, Washington County, Iowa. He and Anna May appeared on the census of 16 July 1860 at English River, Washington County, Iowa.[1]
Joseph died on 5 Jan. 1879[3] and was buried at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Richmond, Washington County, Iowa. His memorial has a photo of his memorial monument with the inscription:
