Biography

I have been an amateur genealogist for 20 years & have written several family histories. However, after years of research I still have many unanswered questions on some of my Trees, so I thought I would try working within WikiTree. After working in private on my trees, I find that I love the idea of collaborating on a World Tree & think it is a marvelous idea.

My passion for genealogy began when my father died in 1985, and I realized how little I knew of about him. I vowed to change that & the years of research and discovery have wielded so many amazing discoveries - things I could never have dreamed.

In the early years I was fortunate to live near the wonderful Wisconsin Historical Archives on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It was there I found a beautiful genealogy of a previously unknown family line - the Ely's -- and I was hooked. I can still remember the day I first saw the names of my great grandparents in the Index of that book. Later on, I would work between the University of Wisconsin and Higginson's Genealogical Books in Salem, MA to get that old family history into their book list so it could be discovered by other researchers. Now I know that people can buy it every day & that gives me much pleasure.

My husband and I have been lucky to live in many different places, so we have traveled to cemeteries and libraries all over the country in search of ancestors. As I get older, the world wide web makes it easier to search for records - which I appreciate. I am not sure it is more fun - but it is easier.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Jean or other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jean:

Thank you Jean for your information on Thomas Neff. I'm trying to find Asenath his daughter being the Mother of Robert C Nichols when she married Abner Nichols Dec 14, 1823. Robert was born Feb 6 1827 in Sandgate, VT. Any find would be so appreciated. - Elaine

Thanks for your note about Benjamin Coe and Daniel. You don't have to check with me before adding a profile.

If you looked it up in the Coe book, then you probably linked him to the right Benjamin Coe; Benjamin was a very popular name for Coes but that Ben and Daniel appear to be in the same area at the same time. There is a Daniel in the list of Ben's children copied from the Coe Book. Welcome to the Coes on Wikitree.

Hi guest,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a Pre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.

It looks like US History Project would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag United_States_History will help you get updates about activity for that project.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Hi Jean,

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far?

Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful? Most of us still have some questions after reviewing them.

Congratulations on getting connected to the main WIkiTree! Did you see that your DNA test has now populated up and down the tree to help you find matches?

I'm here to help with questions about how WikiTree works. Click my name to send me a private message or ask in the comment section of my page. I'll get back to you by the end of the day.

P.S. If links do not work in an email from WikiTree, try them from the comment section on your profile page.

Welcome back Jean

I am pleased to confirm you as a full member, and welcome you to the WikiTree family as your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to help answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site

Happy tree climbing

Karen ~ WikiTree Greeter

Hi Jean,

Welcome to WikiTree. By now you should have received an email with helpful links to get you started on adding your family to ours. WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person and that means we share ancestors and work together as a BIG collaborative team! What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree? When you confirm your email address, you’ll be given an opportunity to volunteer to help document our collective family history. Use the Tags and comments to tell us about your genealogical interests. When you volunteer, one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership. Enjoy the experience,

Bill D :-D
