Biography

Mary Elizabeth Remy was born circa 1693, in Cople Parish, Westmoreland county, Virginia, a daughter of William Remy and Catherine Asbury. Her maternal grandmother, for whom she was named, remembered her as "Mary Remy" in her Will:

  • 19 Jun 1709 "Mary Asbury, widow, give unto Mary Remy, her granddaughter, daughter of William and Catherine Remy" [1]

In the Will of, her father, William Remy, she is remembered as "Mary Sandors:"

  • "Item I give and bequeath to my son William Remy (spelling) and Jacob Ramy's (spelling) heirs and Asberry Ramay (spelling) and my daughter Mary Sandors and Catherine Wormoth each of them one shilling sterling." [2]

On June 9, 1709, in Westmoreland county, Mary Elizabeth married William Sandors/Sanders/Saunders, born before 1688, in Westmoreland county, a son of Philip Sanders and Elizabeth Graves. Children of Elizabeth and William include:

  • William Sanders, II, born circa 1708, in Westmoreland county, Virginia, died February 8, 1768, in Frederick county, Virginia, married Elizabeth Gunnell, a daughter of William Gunnell and Martha Corbin
  • Philip Sanders, born before 1710, in Westmoreland county, Virginia, died in October, 1769, in Loudoun county, Virginia
  • Ursula Sanders, born circa 1720 in Cople Parish, Westmoreland county, Virginia, died after 1750, in Hamilton Parish, Prince William county, Virginia, married Thomas Walker, IV

Mary Elizabeth is named as the wife "Elizabeth" when William Sandors/Sanders/Saunders wrote his Last Will and Testament on 31 March, 1726, in Westmoreland county, Virginia. The Will was probated on 29 June, 1726. William's will mentions his sons John, Phillip, James and William; wife Elizabeth; daughters Mary and Ursula; daughters Sarah and Elizabeth Saunders/Sanders both not yet 18 years old at the time of William's Will.
