Biography

Susannah "Reno" Reneau Gaston was born 6/22/1795 in Ohio, USA. Believe family group sheet has correct birth day, but incorrect birth year. Correct birth year and birthplace was determined by 1850 census records. It is known that she was functionally illiterate and that all records were written by clerks, this is the cause of her given name being spelled Reno instead of Reneau. Her parentage is unconfirmed at this time, George Reneau is believed to be her father and the name of her mother is unknown.

March 1, 1811 – Marriage Date in Pennsylvania of James and Susannah Gaston per Family Group Sheet. On December 18, 1851 Susannah Gaston died in Owen County, Indiana. James Gaston continued to reside in Owen County, Indiana, so it can be surmised her burial is there, but the gravesite location has been lost to the ravages of time.[1]

C… Gaston named on grave marker in Williams – Gaston Cemetery, Green Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Sandstone Grave Marker is broken. Believed to be son born between 1826 and 1828 according to Census record of 1830 confirming birth. Date of death is unknown but is prior to 1840 census.

Death of James Gaston is recorded in a Listing of Epidemic Deaths that occurred in Owen County maintained at the Indiana State Library. Cause of death is listed as Typhoid in October 1850 in Montgomery Township, Owen County, Indiana.

1850 - Census Record Shows James and Susannah in Montgomery Township, Owen, Indiana with Sarah, William and Ellenor in their household. The record contains the age of household members and the birthplaces of the 3 children.

January 1, 1851 – Marriage of Harrison Gaston and Margaret Jane Echols (Eckles) in Monroe County, Ohio per Family Group Sheet.

December 18, 1851 – Death of Susannah Gaston in Owen County, Indiana. James Gaston continued to reside in Owen County, Indiana, so it can be surmised her burial is there, but the gravesite location has been lost to the ravages of time.

1. Family Group Sheet authored by Margret Echols Gaston in the possession of descendants. Written about 10 years after the death of James Gaston on a form copyrighted in 1870. The Original is in possession of family descendants. The author knew her in-laws personally and this is a valid source. From young adulthood, Margaret lived in Monroe County, Ohio, where James and Susannah Gaston had previously resided. When James and Susannah removed to Owen County, Indiana, Margaret and her husband, Harris Gaston, followed.

2. 1830 Census Records of Green Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Contains enumeration of James and Susannah Gaston Household.

3. 1840 Census Records of Green Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Contains enumeration of James and Susannah Gaston Household and the enumeration of George Gaston Household.

4. 1840 Census Record of Salem Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Contains enumeration of John Gaston Household.

5. A February 2, 1849 deed for 80 acres was conveyed by James and Susannah Gaston of Monroe County to John Boughner. The deed reads "situated in County of Monroe, State of Ohio, and in the district of land heretofore subject to sale at Marietta, Ohio, described as follows the west half of the South east quarter of section 16, Township 3 Range 4" (Deed Vol 12 page 127 - Monroe County Ohio)

6. 1850 Census Record of Montgomery Township, Owen County, Indiana. Contains enumeration of James and Susannah Gaston household. 1850 Owen County, Indiana family 277 (ancestry.com)

7. On July 25, 1852, seven months following Susannah's death James executed a deed in Owen County to Harrison Gaston of Monroe County, Ohio. (Owen County, Indiana Book of Deeds page 591: recorded April 15, 1855) James Gaston to Harris Gaston in consideration for the sum of $300 to me paid by Harris Gaston of Monroe County, Ohio do give, grant, bargain, sell in fee simple the following tracts of land, the SE qtr of the NE qtr of section 35 in township 11, North range 4 West and also the E1/2 of the NE 1/4 of the NE qtr of section 35 in township 11, N of range 4 W containing 60 acres more or less

8. A marriage certificate was issued to James Gaston and Lydia Dixon, a widow, in Owen County, Indiana in 1854.

9. 1860 Census Record of Montgomery Township, Owen County, Indiana. James is a farmer with a real estate value of $1300 and personal estate as $500. William, the youngest son of James and Susannah, resides with them.

10. Administration of probate was first filed on April 24, 1861 in Owen County Indiana Probate Court by Lydia Gaston. In her statement she states, "James Gaston departed this life intestate in said county on April 9, 1861 she states his estate to be administered of the probable value of about $300." Lydia was appointed administrix and John Secrest administrator. A lengthy estate inventory valued at $577.61 was submitted to the Owen County court on July 9, 1861. John Secrest, administrator stated he paid $223.61 to widow and relieving (as administrix) "the said widow having married ' David Pool,' October 9, 1862." In filing the Final report (July 6, 1863) the administrator states the inventory included items that belonged to John Gaston that totaled in the amount of $349.50

11. Lydia Gaston, the widow of James, and Jacob Pool were issued a marriage license in Owen County, Indiana on August 26, 1862.

12. 1870 Census record of Owen County, Indiana enumerates the household of Jacob and Lydia Pool.

Filed for petition 2 Feb. 1866: "Harris Gaston the plaintiff shows to the court that William Gaston departed this life on __ day of __ and at the time of his death he was owner in fee simple of the following tracts of land situated in Owen County, Indiana, NW 1/4 of Sec 35 T 11 N R 4 W. containing 37 acres and another beginning at NW corner of the NE 1/4 of sec 35 T 11 N R 4 W containing 84 acres except 37 acres set off for Lydia Gaston. Said defendants John Gaston, Mary Rhodes, June Bennett, Sarah Melick, and Ellenor Williams are brother and sister to William Gaston deceased. Defendants Ann and Levina Gaston are the daughters of George Gaston deceased who was a brother to William Gaston. Probate Record Owen County Indiana Vol 4-1 1 Jan 1866-1 May 1871.

14. January 31, 1866 Probate record: "Ann Gaston, Levina Gaston, John Gaston, Mary Rhodes, John Rhodes, Joseph H. Bennet, Jane Bennett, Ellenor Williams and John B. Williams are nonresidents of the State of Indiana. Appraisal showed the lands were not susceptible of partitions and ordered to be sold. The described land sold for sum or $675 on May 4, 1871.” Probate Record Owen County Indiana Vol 4-1 1 Jan 1866-1 May 1871.

Reneau-62 and Unknown-220461 do not represent the same person because: Susannah Gaston (Unknown-220461) is in the Ashcroft line. Susannah Gaston (Reneau-62) is in the Reneau line and they are not the same individual.
