Biography

Christian Renny was born in Falkirk, Scotland 21 January 1795. She was baptized in the Church of Scotland in Falkirk, Scotland, 24 Jan 1795.[1]

Her eldest sister Agnes had arrived in Halifax in 1814 with her husband John Young and their family. It is not known when Christian arrived in Halifax. She married James Thomson in St. Matthew’s Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia, 27 April 1824. The marriage was performed the Rev. Ebenezer Renny, an assistant in that parish for a few months and Christian’s brother. Christian was 29 years old, and James was 48. [2] [3] They went to live in James’ home in Jamaica, which was called Spital, and there Christina became the mother of three sons, James Thomson who was born 13 April 1825, George Thomson who was born on 31 Aug 1826 and Cathcart Thomson who was born on 24 May 1828.

Christian took her children to Halifax, Nova Scotia after James died 2 January 1829 and appears to have resided in Halifax from that time. [4] After 1835, she gave a Communion Service to Rev. Alexander Romans, minister of the Presbyterian Church of St. James, Dartmouth. By 1871, she lived in her son James’ household. [5] Christian died 13 November 1879 Halifax, Nova Scotia, at 84 years of age. Her body was interred in Camp Hill Cemetery.[6]
