Notes

Many of the following notes need further research.

Joseph Rexford purchased land in Sharon Twp., Litchfield Co., in 1760 and 1761. Other land records in 1790 and 1810.
JA (?) shows another mother for these children with Abigail being a later wife of Joseph. The mother according to JA was Lydia Spencer born 1732 in Hadden, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, who married Joseph Rexford Sr. on 28 November 1753 in Meriden Parish, Wallingford Twp., New Haven. Uncle Daniel's son Joel also married a Spencer, Rhoda. I wonder whether the children didn?t have different mothers, because there are some big gaps in the children?s dates of birth.
Note: The distance between Haddam (center), Middlesex, CT to Wallingford, Meriden, CT is under 20 miles.

A source of information is REXFORD GENEALOGY. compiled by John DeWitt Rexford in 1891. He says the following about Joseph Rexford Sr., b. 11 June 1732; I have learned but little of him, nor have I any direct line of his descendants. He went with or followed his father <this would be Arthur> to Sharon <Litchfield Co. CT>. Land records in Sharon show purchases by Joseph in 1760 and 1761, and several deeds of conveyance to and sale by Joseph are recorded in the years 1790 to 1810. A Joseph, of Sharon, moved to Austerlitz, Columbia County, N.Y. in 1786. A Joseph Rexford, described as "Yeoman of Manor of Rensselaerwyck", took a lease of land from Stephen Van Rensselaer 8 Sept. 1790. I think it probable that he was the same Joseph. The Austerlitz Joseph finally settled in the town of Otsego, Otsego Co. N.Y. and conveyed land there as early as in 1808.

Joseph Rexford Sr's. will, dated 25 Dec. 1806, describes him as "of town and county of Otsego, and was probated in said county 13 Sept. 1815. It gives to Abigail, his wife, to his daughters, Elizabeth Welch and Lydia Converse, and to his sons, Ensign, Joseph, John and Jesse. There was a son Jared. Ensign and Jared died in Otsego Co., N.Y. and some of their descendants are still there. Source: REXFORD GENEALOGY. compiled by John DeWitt Rexford in 1891

Another record of this Joseph Rexford Sr. is found in LE DESPENCER, the Newsletter of the Spencer Family Association, Vol. 6, # 3, July 1983, p. 69. The record is as follows: Lydia Spencer, daughter of Gerard and Elizabeth (Shailor) Spencer was b. perhaps Haddam, Ct. about 1732, married at Wallingford, Ct. 28 Nov. 1753 Joseph Rexford, b. 11 June 1732. His will probated in Otsego Co., N.Y. in 1815 leaving 2nd. wife Abigail.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
