Biography

Birth

George was born to Richard and Sarah Reynolds on 7 July 1815 in Wilberforce, Hawksbury, New South Wales, Australia [1] The text of his birth certificate states:

3779/1815 V18153779 1B; REYNOLDS, GEORGE; [F] RICHARD; [M] SARAH[2]

In 1839, along with his sister Elizabeth, George became one of the first landholders at Gunning.[3]

In 1840 he married Anne Lawless.[4]

After Anne died in 1854, George is understood to have married or joined with Emma Baker.[5]

Occupation: Vinedresser and Distiller, Baltinglass, Gunning, Yass, NSW, Australia. 1871-1873

Event: 10 September 1873 Caught over-producing Brandy!

EXTENSIVE SEIZURE OF SPIRITS, WINE, AND OTHER PROPERTY.
ON Wednesday last Mr. Sub-inspector Brennan, in his capacity of local inspector of distilleries, made a seizure, on behalf of the Crown, of a dray-Ioad of spirits, wine, &c. It appears that Mr. George Reynolds of Baltlnglass, near Gunning, is licensed to distil brandy to fortify the wines made in his extensive vineyard, and on Wednesday, Mr. Brennan, about seven miles on the Yass side of Gunning, and on the main southern road, came upon a large and well-built double-waggon, tilted over and drawn by six valuable horses, the driver riding upon a seventh horse. On inquiring as to the contents of the waggon, the inspector was informed that it was wine, en route to a station possessed by Mr. Reynolds "down the river." Mr. Brennan, however, had his doubts on the subject, and was about to broach a cask or two with a gimlet, which, by some means, was at hand, when he was told it was no use, as there was brandy at well as wine on the waggon. It was then discovered that there were seven thirty-five-gallon casks of brandy, of unusual strength, and seven thirty-five-gallon casksj at colonial wine in the load, which, together with the waggon, seven horses, and other property, were at once declared to be confiscated, and taken back to Gunning, where the whole was given Into the safe keeping of the police. The property seized exeeds £500, and, in addition, Mr. Reynold's two sureties are likely to be called upon to pay £100 each for his having infringed the conditions of his license. The property remains at Gunning awaiting instructions from Mr. Lumsdaine, the chief inspector of dlstilleries.-Yass Courier.[6]

George died in 1896.[7]

Buried 12 DEC 1896. Zone C, Section RRRR, Grave 318, Rookwood, Greater Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. [8]
