Biography

Cecil was born to parents who had come down to the 'Boston States' as a part of a great migration to escape the effects of the decline of the fishing industry then gripping Newfoundland. In November 1904, he was taken 'home' to Freshwater where his early years were spent with his maternal grandparents. They lived on Benjy's Hill, above Clown's Cove and Freshwater. After several years, his family moved down the peninsula to Small Point where his father had built their own home. Cecil was a bright young man. He earned a Jubilee scholarship and became a Rhodes Scholar. After returning to the United States, he earned a degree at Harvard University 'because there were no jobs in 1930-31.' He thaught three years at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, then followed its dean, Arthur Hauck, to the University of Maine. He has now retired after 37 years of teaching English and is now preparing his autobiography. He founded the Freshman and Sophomore honours program which is still running and is enhanced by an Honors Center library, named for him. Before and during the school years he has written guest columns for local papers on topics from education and religion to politics and economics.
