Biography

Phillip was the adopted son of William and Margaret Gough. There is no known evidence indicating whether this was a legal adoption or more informal; nor what the relationship (if any) was between the Goughs and Phillip's biological parents.

1860 - living in Riga with William & Margaret Gough. Age 7.[1]

1865 - living in Riga with William & Margaret. Age 12; nephew. Born in Genesee County.[2]

1870 - living in Riga with William and Margaret. Age 14. Both parents of foreign birth. Listed as Phillip Goff.[3]

1875 - living in Riga with William & Margaret. Age 22. Relationship: servant. Laborer.[4]

1880 - living in Riga with adopted father William Gough; Phillip's wife Catherine, and their daughter Mary. Age 25. Farm hand. Listed as William's "ad son," which I take to mean adopted son.[5]

In 1887 Philip was living in Rochester, working as a driver.[6] In 1889, living at 78 Tremont in Rochester, working as a driver.[7]In 1890, now living at 158 S. Ford in Rochester, a driver.[8]

Philip is not listed in the 1892 Rochester city directory. In the 1893 directory, the listing is: Reynolds, Philip H., removed from city.[9]

Notes

Note -- Phillip disappears from the record after the birth of youngest son Ferdinand. He is not listed in the 1900 census with Catherine and the children; his death does not appear in the NY state vital records index 1895-1900; and the state of NY has no record of him enlisting for the Spanish-American War. His granddaughter Frances Reynolds said she was told he went to Wisconsin or Minnesota.
