Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Thomas Reynolds was a Maryland colonist.

Origin

No record of the birth of Thomas Reynolds has been found. His birth is an estimate based on his year of marriage. More research is needed to prove his parentage. According to Anne Arundel land records, there was a Rowland Reynolds living near the Severn River as early as 1671 who was possibly his father.[1] Another possible father comes from Inventory records that prove there was a Thomas Reynolds who died in Anne Arundel County before 9 NOV 1700. Unfortunately, he did not leave a will.[2]

Clues

1688 - Thomas Renol's was left a serge coat & britches in the will of John Acton who lived in the Annapolis area.[3]
1698 - Thomas Reynolds & Elizabeth Smith (the sister of John Acton) witnessed the will of John Couzens of AA.[4]

Thomas Reynolds is often labeled as a gentleman in the many deeds where he was buying property in Anne Arundel County in the early 1700s. He was the High Sheriff of Anne Arundel County by 20 SEP 1713.[5]

Marriage & Family

The marriage of Thomas Reynolds and Sarah Griffith on 30 NOV 1699 is recorded among the records of St. Anne's parish in Annapolis. The births of their children are also recorded in the same parish:

  1. Maccubbin Reynolds son b. 13 MAY 1707
  2. Sarah Reynolds dau. b. 9 JUN 1710[1]
  3. Levina Reynolds dau. b. 31 Jan 1700 at 11 am
  4. Thomas Reynolds son b. 25 Jan 1703 about 3 am[6]
  5. Rebecca b. abt. 1705
  6. Turner b. abt. 1707 [7]

Property

After the courthouse in Annapolis burnt down and destroyed many records, owners of property in that county appeared in court to register their claims. In 1705 Thomas Reynolds registered a claim for a tract of land called Clark's Luck located on the north side of South River in the right of his wife as the relict and legatee of William Griffith, deceased. [8] In another deed he is called Thomas Reynolds, Gentleman of Anne Arundel when he registered a tract called Greenberry for 60 acres. [9]

By 22 April 1725 he was married to a second wife named Elizabeth and is listed as Thomas Reynolds, Senior in a deed to his son-in-law, Amos Sympson and his daughter Levina Sympson where he conveys 210 acres for natural love and affection from a tract called Food & Plenty. Another deed of gift conveys land 210 acres from the same tract to two children who do not appear in in the parish record, Rebecca and Turner is dated 11 April 1726[10]

No will for Thomas has been found. There is a record of an inventory taken in Anne Arundel County for a Thomas Reynolds in 1744, but this may be his son of the same name. [11]
