Biography

Spicy RHEA / RAY was born about 1795 or 1796 in Virginia or Pennsylvania [See Research Progress : Birth Estimate of Spicy RHEA section for information on how this estimate was obtained.] and died between 29 March 1887 when the postmaster of Pikeville, Kentucky stated that she was still living in Floyd County, Kentucky[1] and 1900 in Kentucky. Her last known residence was in Floyd County, Kentucky. She is believed to have been the daughter of John Watson RHEA, Sr. and Rutha ROBERTSON.

Spicey RHEA was married on 18 May 1817 in Scott County, Virginia to Samuel HALL.[2], [1]

Marriage Record of Samuel Hall to Spicy Ray
There is a marriage record in Scott County, Virginia in 18 May 1817, but it is indexed as "Samuel Hetland and Spicy Ray".[3], [4], [5]

Samuel HALL was born about 1795 in Virginia or about 1797 in North Carolina [See Research Progress : Birth Estimate of Samuel HALL section for information on how this estimate was obtained.] and died about 12 January or 12 February 1885 in Floyd County, Kentucky.[1] He was the son of Rueben HALL, Sr. and Nancy Polly Branham SMITH.

Samuel HALL enlisted on 4 February 1815 as a Private in Captain George Kendricks' Company of the Virginia Militia. This would have been barely in the War of 1812 (18 June 1812 - 18 February 1815). He was discharged from his service on 6 March 1815.[1]

Children List of Samuel HALL and Spicey RHEA:

Guardianship of Grandchildren:

In the Clerk's office in Lawrence County, Kentucky, Samuel HALL appeared before R. F. VINSON, the clerk of the county court of Lawrence County, Kentucky on 22 March 1865. The purpose of the visit was to obtain a survivor pension for the minor children of the orphan children of Granville ELLIOTT and his daughter, Nancy HALL in a claim for their father's Civil War Service. In this listing it was stated that Granville ELLIOTT was a private in Company K, 39th Kentucky Volunteers, that he enlisted on 16 November 1862 and was mustered into the rank of private on 14 January 1863. The pension request further states that Granville ELLIOTT died on 9 April 1863 in Ashland, Kentucky and that he died of Typhoid Fever. Nancy (HALL) ELLIOTT was listed as not receiving any pension, as she died on 30 January 1865 which was before the end of the war. The cause of her death was listed as Small Pox. The record stated that Samuel HALL was appointed the guardianship of their three minor children on 20 March 1865.

Granville ELLIOTT and Nancy HALL were married 20 April 1852 in Pike County, Kentucky.

Names of the Minor Children of Granville ELLIOTT and Nancy HALL:

  • Note: Samuel HALL had to provide witnesses to the births of the children as multiple dates of birth were given in the pension request for each child. When this occurs in the listing all births are listed in following manner (Born: [earliest date given]; Alternate Birth: [each additional listing for birth date]). Note that sometimes this may have been just a matter of days between the listings, but others are months apart.
  1. William Greenville ELLIOTT (Born: 5 April 1854; Alternate Birth: 6 April 1854)
  2. Samuel ELLIOTT (Born: 16 September 1858; Alternate Birth: 19 October 1859; Alternate Birth: 19 November 1859)
  3. Lydia ELLIOTT (Born: 12 June 1862; Alternate Birth: 19 June 1862; Alternate Birth: 21 May 1863)
  • These three children were present in the household of Samuel HALL in the 1870 U. S. Census Record[11] and the 1880 U. S. Census Record[12]

The Witnesses to the births of the children:

  1. On 24 November 1870, Spicey HALL stated she was present with Mrs. Nancy ELLIOTT at the birth of her son, William Greenville on 5 April 1854, and at the birth of Lydia on 12 June 1862. She also stated that she went to the house of Granville ELLIOT with the midwife, Betsey ELLIOTT, now deceased, on 4 November 1859 and that they stayed with them twelve days waiting for the birth of the child, but she became sick and had to return to her home. She stated that she believed that the child must have been born a few days after she left the house and that Nancy had told her that Samuel was born on 19 November 1859. She mentioned another daughter had a child born 30 November 1859 but neither the name of the daughter or the name of the child were mentioned.
  2. On 6 August 1870, Mary AKERS stated that she was visiting the household of Granville ELLIOTT and was present when Samuel ELLIOTT was born on 19 November 1859. [Attested By Miles HALL and Tolbert AKERS, Jr.]
  3. On 8 July 1870, Matilda HOTT stated she was present at the house of Mrs. Nancy ELLIOTT on the day after the birth of Lydia ELLIOTT. That the birth of Lydia ELLIOTT occurred on 12 June 1862. [ Attested: Lindsey LAYNE, Riley HALL]
  4. On 8 July 1870, Polly HALL made an oath that she was present at the house of Mrs. Nancy ELLIOTT the day after the birth of one of her children who was born on or about 5 April 1854 [Attested by Lindsey LAYNE and William HALL] - note: on the statement included in the file, the word April is listed above the word November which has been crossed out. [RESEARCHER's NOTE: Riley HALL, the son of Samuel HALL was married 3 times, his second wife was named Mary Ann ADAMS. It is possible this Polly HALL was the same as Riley's second wife, Mary Ann ADAMS.]
  5. Samuel HALL, Sr. explained the discrepancies in the name of William Greenville ELLIOTT given in the listing that he went by Greenville or Green and that William was a part of his name, but was ordinarily not used. The discrepancies in the dates of birth was explained that when he originally gave the birth information that he was doing it from memory and he knew them to be wrong. He went on to say that William Greenville was born on 5 April 1854, Samuel was born 19 November 1859 and Lydia was born 12 June 1862. Also he stated that William Greenville was deaf and dumb.

Nancy (HALL) ELLIOTT's widow's pension form:

Nancy ELLIOTT appeared in Lawrence County, Kentucky on 15 March 1864 and they stated that she was 31 Years of Age.

Other witnesses:

  1. On 8 July 1870, Riley HALL and Polly HALL stated that they were present at the funeral of Mrs. Nancy ELLIOTT, the widow of Granville ELLIOTT on or about 30 January 1865. [Attested: Lindsey LAYNE and William HALL]

Research Progress

Birth Estimate of Spicey RHEA:

The current hypothesis is that Spicey RHEA was born about 1795 or about 1796. She was probably born in Virginia, but at least one record points towards possible connection to her place of birth being in Pennsylvania. This birth estimate was based upon the following information:

In the 1820 U. S. census record of her husband,[6] the oldest female in the household was enumerated in the age bracket of 16 to 26 years. [Birth Estimate: 1794 - 1804]
In the 1830 U. S. census record of her husband,[7] the oldest female in the household was enumerated in the age bracket of 30 to 40 Years. [Birth Estimate: 1790 - 1800]
In the 1840 U. S. census record of her husband,[8] the oldest female in the household was enumerated in the age bracket of 40 to 50 Years. [Birth Estimate: 1790 - 1800]
In the 1850 U. S. census record,[9] the household of Samuel HALL contained an individual named Spicey HALL who was listed as being 54 years old and born in Virginia. [Birth Estimate: 1796]
In the 1860 U. S. census record,[10] the household of Samuel HALL contained an individual named Spicy HALL who was listed as being 65 years old and born in Virginia. [Birth Estimate: 1795]
In the 1870 U. S. census record,[11] the household of Samuel HALL contained an individual named Spicey HALL who was listed as being 75 years old and born in Pennsylvania. [Birth Estimate: 1795]
In the 1880 U. S. census record,[12] the household of Samuel HALL contained an individual named Spicey HALL who was listed as being 85 Years old and born in Virginia. [Birth Estimate: 1795]

Death Estimate of Spicey RHEA:

The date of death of Spicey (RHEA) HALL is currently unknown but the current hypothesis is that she died sometime between died between 29 March 1887[13] and 1900 in Kentucky.

In the widow's pension filed by Spicy HALL for her husband's War of 1812 service, F. C. HATCHER, who was the postmaster of Pikeville, Kentucky, stated that as of 29 March 1887, "Spicey Hall is still living and resides in Floyd County, Ky."[1]
I have been unable to locate a listing for Spicey (RHEA) HALL in the 1900 U. S. census record. As she would have been approximately 105 years old at the time of its enumeration, I believe it is safe to say that she was probably deceased by 1900.

Birth Estimate of Samuel HALL:

The current hypothesis on the birth of Samuel HALL was that it occurred sometime between 1794 and 1797 in either Virginia or North Carolina.

This birth estimate was based upon the following information:

In the 1820 U. S. census record of Samuel HALL,[6] the oldest male in the household was enumerated in the age bracket of 16 to 26 years. It is important to note that there was no marking in the column set aside for free white males aged 16 to 18 years. This probably means that Samuel HALL was between 18 and 26 Years of age at the time of the 1820 U. S. census enumeration. [Birth Estimate: 1796 - 1804].
In the 1830 U. S. census record of Samuel HALL,[7] the oldest male in the household was enumerated in the age bracket of 30 to 40 Years. [Birth Estimate: 1790 - 1800]
In the 1840 U. S. census record of Samuel HALL,[8] the oldest male in the household was enumerated in the age bracket of 40 to 50 Years. [Birth Estimate: 1790 - 1800]
In the 1850 U. S. census record,[9] Samuel HALL, Sr. was listed as being 53 years old and born in North Carolina. [Birth Estimate: 1797]
In the 1860 U. S. census record,[10] Samuel HALL, Sr. was listed as being 65 years old and born in Virginia. [Birth Estimate: 1795]
In the 1870 U. S. census record,[11] Samuel HALL was listed as being 73 years old and born in Virginia. [Birth Estimate: 1797]
In the 1880 U. S. census record,[12] Samuel HALL was listed as being 86 Years old and born in Virginia. [Birth Estimate: 1794]

Death Estimate of Samuel HALL:

The current hypothesis is that Samuel HALL died on either 12 January 1885 or 12 February 1885 in Floyd County, Kentucky.

The Widow's pension filed by Spicy Hall for her husband's War of 1812 service shows two dates of death for him within the record on two separate pages. The first was 12 February 1885 and the second was 12 January 1885.[1] Since the family was living in Floyd County, Kentucky in 1880 and his widow was living in 1887 in Floyd County, Kentucky it is very probable that he died in Floyd County, Kentucky. However, no certificate of death has been found for Samuel HALL.
The 12 February 1885 appears to have been part of the original application and probably was informed by Spicy HALL, the widow.
The 12 January 1885 was listed as being informed by Samuel Keel the post master on or about 6 January 188* with the year probably being 1886. The post mark of this letter to J. H. Carr was listed as P. O. Robinson Creek, KY.

Marriage Estimate of Samuel HALL and Spicey RHEA:

The current hypothesis of the marriage date and place of Samuel HALL and Spicey RHEA is that they were married on 18 May 1817 in Scott County, Virginia.

In the Widow's pension filed by Spicy HALL for her husband's War of 1812 service, the marriage was listed as being on 17 May 1817 in Scott County, Virginia on the form filled out for the pension mentioning dates of enlistment, residence in 1855, 1878, and 1885, the death date of soldier and the marriage date of the soldier and widow.[1]
In the widow's pension filed by Spicy HALL for her husband's War of 1812 service, a statement made by George E. KING, J. P. was written to the Clerk office in Scott County, Virginia to verify that Samuel HALL and Spicey Rhea were married on 18 May 1817 "according to the forms and customs of the Methodis E. P. C." John M. JOHNSON the Clerk of County Court of Scott County, Virginia returned that as "Keeper of the records thereof do, certify that the foregoing is a true transcript from the files in my office." on 18 April 1887.[1]

William ADAMS and Louisa ADAMS were the next household that was enumerated after the household of Samuel HALL and Spicey HALL. It is very possible that she was visiting her grandparents on the day of enumeration.

Investigation of Known sources

Widow's Pension for Samuel HALL's War of 1812 Service:

The widow's pension request for the service of her husband, Samuel HALL's service in the War of 1812 stated that Samuel HALL and Spicey RHEA were married on 18 May 1817 in Scott County, Virginia.[1]

No information on the names of children were recorded in the Widow's Pension request for the service of her husband, Samuel Hall's service in the War of 1812.[1]

Information from Available Census Records:

  • It is important to note that none of the children listed within these households contain relationship data. That was not added until the 1880 U. S. census record. There were no state census records for the state of Kentucky.
From the date listed in the widows pension of 18 May 1817, the first census that this couple would have been enumerated as a Married Couple would have been 1820. That census record was found in Floyd County, Kentucky and it contained two female children under the age of 10 years and one male child under the age of 10 years. Adding in that their parents were married in May 1817, the births of these three children were probably somewhere between December 1817 and 1820.
The Second Census for this family was the 1830 U. S. census record was found in Pike County, Kentucky and it contained the following children:
A Free White Male Child that was aged 10 to 15 years [in 1820 he was the one listed as being under 10 years]
A Free White Female Child that was listed as aged 10 to 15 years [in 1820 she was one of two females listed as being under 10 years.]
A Free White Female Child that was listed as aged 5 to 10 years [Since the parents were married in 1817, this individual is believed to have been the other free white female listed as being under 10 years. She was probably born sometime between 1819 - 1820 which would account for her difference between the two census records.]
Two Free White Males listed as being under 5 years.
In the 1840 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky, Samuel HALL had the following underage children living within his household:
A Free White Male Aged 5 to 10 Years [Researcher's ID: Harmon HALL, estimated birth about 1831 per 1850 U. S. Census record]
Two Free White Males Aged 10 to 15 Years
Two Free White Females Aged Under 5 Years [Researcher's ID: Rebecca HALL, estimated birth about 1835 and Louisa HALL, estimated birth about 1838 per 1850 U. S. census record]
A Free White Female Aged 5 to 10 Years [Researcher's ID: Nancy HALL, estimated birth about 1833 per 1850 U. S. Census record]
A Free White Female Aged 15 to 20 Years.
In the 1850 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky,[9] the household of Samuel HALL and Spicey (RHEA) HALL have 4 named children. Although there is no reported relationship between the individuals in the household with the head of the household, it is likely that these children were the children of Samuel HALL and Spicey (RHEA) HALL.
Harmon HALL (b. about 1831)
Nancy HALL (b. about 1833)
Rebecca HALL (b. about 1835)
Louisa HALL (b. about 1838).

Marriage Bonds of Pike County, Kentucky

  • Children may have had to have permission for marriage from one or both parents if they were underage. These are shown in the Marriage Bonds of the counties in which the family lived. In this case that was in Pike County, Kentucky. Unfortunately Pike County, Kentucky marriage bonds were not microfilmed by the Church of Latterday Saints and as such a secondary source had to be consulted. This secondary source was Clyde Runyon’s Marriage Bonds of Pike County, Kentucky 1822 – 1865 published in Belfry, Kentucky by the author in 1984. I was lucky to have a fellow researcher give me a copy of this book for my research since she had bought a copy and had determined the individuals she was researching were not included in the records transcribed within. The following list of individuals was found to have received permission to marry from Samuel HALL, are probable matches to individuals seen in other records or the individual was listed as his child in the actual marriage bond:
  1. File 404 – Mary HALL was given permission to marry Harrison NEWSOME on 11 December 1834 in Pike County, Kentucky by her father, Samuel HALL.[14]
  2. File 634 – Catherine HALL was given permission to marry Owen HALL (the son of Mesias HALL) on 11 June 1840 in Pike County, Kentucky by her father, Samuel HALL.[15]
  3. File 635 – Henry HALL was given permission to marry Agatha BRANHAM on 2 January 1840 in Pike County, Kentucky by his father, Samuel HALL.[16]
  4. File 934 – Samuel HALL, Jr.’s marriage bond to Melinda EDWARDS stated that the fathers of the participants were present and the bond is listed to have been signed by Samuel HALL, Jr. and Samuel Hall, Sr. Samuel HALL, Jr. and Melinda EDWARDS were married in June 1847 in Pike County, Kentucky.[17]
  5. File 1165 – Harmon HALL signed a bond with Samuel HALL for his marriage to Frances M. ELLIOTT on 17 February 1851 in Pike County, Kentucky.[18]
  6. File 1166 – Riley HALL signed a bond with Samuel HALL, Sr. for his marriage to Polly TACKETT on 27 August 1851 in Pike County, Kentucky.[19] In the transcription available he is referred to as “Riley Hall (Sam’s Son)”.
  7. File 1201 – Nancy HALL received a letter of consent to marry dated 19 April 1852 which was signed by Samuel HALL and Spicy HALL for her marriage to Greenville ELLIOTT.[20]
  8. File 1395 – Louisa HALL was listed as the daughter of Saml HALL, Sr. in her marriage bond to marry William ADAMS on 7 January 1857 in Pike County, Kentucky by her father, Samuel HALL.[21] The marriage took place at the house of her father, Samuel HALL and Spicy HALL was listed as one of the individuals present.

Identifying the identities of the children of Samuel HALL and Spicey RHEA:

Note: these may or may not be in order of birth due to the amount of Unknown children.

  1. Unknown Female Child 1 (Born: Between 1817 and 1820) - This individual was not present in the household of Samuel HALL in the 1840 United States Federal Census Record. She probably was either married and in the household of her spouse or deceased in this census record.
  2. Unknown Male Child 1 (Born: Between 1817 and 1820) - This individual was not present in the household of Samuel HALL in the 1840 United States Federal Census Record. He probably was either married and in his own household or deceased in this census record.
  3. Unknown Female Child 2 (Born: Between 1825 and 1830) - Believed to have been the free white female in the age bracket of 15 to 20 years in the 1840 census record. She was not enumerated in her parents' household in 1850.
  4. Unknown Male Child 2 (Born: Between 1825 and 1830) - One of two Free white males aged 10 to 15 years in the 1840 household. They both were not listed in the 1850 household of their parents.
  5. Unknown Male Child 3 (Born: Between 1825 and 1830)
  6. Harmon HALL (Born: About 1831[9] - NOTE: Harmon's death record and tombstone states his birth as 14 March 1823 Probably in Pike County, Kentucky[22] and died on 21 August 1921 in Voting Precinct Number 9, Floyd County, Kentucky. [23]). He was married about 17 February 1851 in Pike County, Kentucky to Frances Minerva ELLIOTT. Frances Minerva ELLIOTT is believed to have been the daughter of Stephen ELLIOTT and Lydia HALL. Frances Minerva ELLIOTT was born about 1835 in Floyd County, Kentucky and died before 21 August 1921 probably in Kentucky. [24] - [Researcher's Notes: Harmon HALL [indexed wrong at ancestry as Harrison HALL], b. about 1831 per the age in 1850 Census record. The death record of Harmon HALL lists Samuel HALL and Spicy HALL as his parents on his death record, but his reported birth date on his death record and tombstone was 14 March 1823. I believe this is an incorrect date of birth and his birth was closer to 1831, perhaps the date was written incorrectly and should read 14 March 1832? That would be closer to the reported ages for all the census records I have been able to find for him.]
  7. Nancy HALL (Born: About 1833 in Kentucky [9]) She was married on 19 April 1853 in Pike County, Kentucky to Granville ELLIOTT.[25]
  8. Rebecca HALL (Born: About 1835 in Kentucky[26]); Married about 6 May 1854 in Pike County, Kentucky to Greenville Tackett.

Rhea-609 and Rhea-559 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge these 2 duplicate individuals so there will be 1 profile for this individual! They were the same person!

Rhea-609 and Rhea-559 are not ready to be merged because: There seem to be many similarities, but also some differences e.g. names of three children. Perhaps further research would confirm or reject this match?
