Biography

Edward J Rhodes Sr was the son of Joseph Rhodes and Mary Bernice Morris Rhodes. He was born in Perry County and raised in the Bois Brule Bottom farmland close to Claryville. His father Joseph also had a home on the bluffs in Chester Illinois across from the family farm.

Edward J Rhodes Sr married Mary Esselman and the couple had 5 children. Edward Sr also owned a General Store in Claryville as well as a saw mill. His wife would die in 1902 at the age of 40 leaving Edward Sr. with 5 children to raise.

He had some problems due to his overuse of alcohol.

Edward Sr also would die at a young age, departing this world in 1908 at the age of 48.

The job of raising the family fell to the youngest daughter Nora Victoria. Nora had problems walking but nonetheless took on the duties of surrogate mother for the family. Nora would die from tuberculosis in 1914 at the age of 27. The remainder of her siblings now grown (Ralph the youngest was 18 when Nora died).

Edward Sr is buried across the river from Claryville in Chester Illinois in the Catholic Cemetery there. His wife Mary, and children Nora and Elmer also rest there (Ralph in St. Louis, Georgia and Edward Jr in Perryville). [1] [2]

  1. March 26, 1908. Chester Herald Tribune - Ed Rhodes died at his home in Claryville last Saturday and the remains were buried in St. Mary of Help Cemetery in this city on Monday afternoon. Mr.Rhodes was about 45 years of age, and as a boy lived in Chester, his parents owning the property now occupied by Frank Paskel. Years ago he moved to Missouri where he has been engaged in farming.
  2. April 9, 1908. Perry County Republican - Edward Rhodes formerly of Perryville, died at home at Claryville Sat. March 21st. He was engaged in mercantile and farming pursuits in Clearyville, & Perryville, & Perry County. His parents, sister, and wife preceded him in death. Chester Cemetery Monday.
