Biography

She was born on 30 Jan 1662 in Derbyshire, England and her parents were Elizabeth (Jessup) and John Rhodes=Roades. [1]

She followed the Quaker faith.

Mary Rhodes or Roades first married on the 9th day of the 9th month [November] 1689 in Chesterfield, Nottinghamshire, England to William Maltby or Maulsby. of Orston, Nottinghamshire, England. [2] The distance between Orston and Ripley is about 34 USA miles (55km). Between the two is the town of Nottingham, County Nottinghamshire a large area inhabited by many Quakers and where they conducted their Monthly Meetings.

In 1698 William and Mary Maltby emigrated from Nottinghamshire, England alledgedly on the ship "Bristol Merchant" because their son Merchant was born at sea as recorded in the Philadelphia Arch Street Monthly Meeting. [3] Their next and final child, David, was born in 1699/1700 in Philadelphia.

When she was pregnant with their last child. her husband William died on the 14th day of eighth month (October) 1699 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [4] [5]

Mary married secondly on 30 Jan 1704 at the Philadelphia Meeting House to David Rhys Williams, [6] They had only one son.

She passed away on the 6th day of the twelveth mo. (February) 1706 at the family residence in Spring Mill, Whitemarsh, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County, Pennsylvania. [7]

Research Notes

Caution "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy" v2: p394 compiled by William Wade Hinshaw & Thomas Worth Marshall; on ancestry.com reprinted citing Philadelphia MM is a secondary source which conflates Mary's son John with Mary's husband William. In the Hinshaw list of Maulsby children, probably taken from the 'Philadelphia Arch Street Monthly Meeting', Hinshaw's work errors by calling them the children of John and Mary Maulsby when it should read the children of William and Mary Maulsby. The five children of Mary's son John Maulsby's (who married Mary Woodward) are not listed in the Hinshaw compilation (they also have different names and later birth dates).

N. Hello. Thanks for the quick merge completion work. I see you've reformatted the inline source citation I had for ref. (3) by removing it from each of the six Maltby children; instead, posting it as a single source ref. to the Childrens listing header. The reason why I made multiple inline citations to each of her Maltby childrens births is based upon much feedback I've seen over the years between the PGM folks. One-off 'bulk' referencing may/will cause confusion for anyone reviewing the profile; they can't make the assumption that the source applies to each of her children, and it's not been declared in the bio as doing so.

The son by David Williams is not included in source 3. Her oldest child John Maltby has been inadvertently dropped from the list of her 6 Maltby children.

Proposed merge: Mary Rhodes who m. 1st William Maltby at the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshre MM arrived at Philly abt 1698 with their five children. Mary's husband d. 1699 when she was pregnant with their last child. Her oldest then being 9 years. Her brother Adam "Roades" (as signed in the Will of William Maltby aka Maulsby), was directed in the Will to help Mary who was sole Executrix. Her brother John "Roades", atty., witnessed the Will. She married a 2nd time David Williams of Plymouth Twp., Philadelphia County, Penn. where later would reside Mary's oldest son with his wife. Plymouth Twp. is situated 13 miles outside Philadelphia. Widower David William & widow Mary Maltby married 11th mo. 30th day 1704/5 in Philadelphia. [Bernard, p.43-44 quoting from Philadelphia Arch St. MM] Supporting this marriage is the list of attendee's which included Mary's brothers Adam, John and Jacob "Roades" her brother in law Edward Dawes (her sister Elizabeth's husband).

Fortunately Rhodes-7648 isn't connected to any parents so we don't have parent and sibling merge complications. Whoever completes the merge: Please don't loose the information and sources posted to Rhodes-12290. Appreciate your time and help. Any question? Just ask the PM's for Rhodes-12290.
