Biography

The Rhodes family moved to Raywick, KY in 1832, from outside Springfield, KY. Mary Louisa Rhodes Head's great aunts, Ann and Mary Rhodes were the first 2 mother superiors of the Sisters of Loretto. Mary Rhodes was one of 3 women who helped start the religious order in 1812, with the help of Father Charles Nerinckx. It was the one of the first female religious orders in the United States. There is a yearly Mary Rhodes award which honors women who work for peace and justice. Ann was the first Mother Superior, followed by Mary after Anns death. Both are buried at Nerinx, Marion County, KY. Mary and Ann's parents were Abraham and Elizabeth Rhodes of Maryland. Mary Louisa Rhodes parents were John L. Rhodes and Charlotte Medley Rhodes. Both were born in Marion County, KY. Mary Louisa Rhodes Head is buried with her husband, W. H Head, at St Francis Xavier Catholic cemetery in Raywick, KY. Her husband, W.H. Head operated a bourbon distillery at Raywick from 1872 until his death in 1896. It was sold at his death and closed upon prohibition in 1920. The distillery stood at the end of present day Head Distillery Road in Raywick, Ky on the left by the pond
