Biography

Abraham was born about 1744, probably in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Abraham was married about 1765 to Mary Gough, daughter of James Gough and Priscilla Heard.

He took an Oath of Allegiance on March 2, 1778, in St. Mary's County, Maryland, as evidenced by the return of Robert Watts to the clerk in St. Mary's.[1]

Abraham was married second to Mary Ann Dant, daughter of John Dant and his wife Elinor. They were married on June 21, 1784 at St. Inigoes Roman Catholic Church in St. Mary's County, Maryland.[2]

Abraham Rhodes can be found in the 1790 U.S. federal census in St. Mary's County, Maryland with two males over 16 and one under. Also listed are four females and 13 slaves.

Mary Ann Dant Rhodes died sometime around 1790. Abraham then married Elizabeth Booth.

Will of Abraham Rhodes, SMC, 7/19/1797-9/12/1797, JJ#2, fol. 197.

Son: Ignatius Rhodes, half of the plantation where I now where the dwelling house stands. Son: Benedict Rhodes, the remaining half of my plantation.

Daughter: Mary Rhodes, a negro boy named George; a negro girl named Anna; and one good feather bed and furniture. Daughter: Ann Rhodes, a negro boy named Tom; a negro girl Sarah; and one good feather bed and furniture.

Sons: James Rhodes, William Rhodes and Cornelius Rhodes, the residue of my estate equally divided. Executors.: Sons, William Rhodes and Benedict Rhodes. Witnesses: James Hopewell, John Booth Abell, Edward Ford.
