OBITUARY: Fred L. Rhodes, Sr., age 92 of Tanglewood, passed away Monday afternoon, October 29, 2018 in the Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
Funeral service is 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Daniel Garrison officiating. Burial in the Hugh Wilson Cemetery at Tanglewood. Visitation is also Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Fred L. Rhodes, Sr., was born April 10, 1926 in Lexington, Texas to Shiloh V. and Mae Belle (Purser) Rhodes. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy and discharged as a Seaman First Class. Fred began work at Alcoa in Rockdale in November of 1952. He worked 30 years and retired January 3, 1983 as an Ingot Supervisor. On May 9, 1947, he and Myrl Maxine Hawkins were married in Houston. Three children were born to this union. After Maxine’s death, he and Minna Belle “Coots” Hawkins were married on March 23, 1988 in Tanglewood. Fred was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church, the Lexington Masonic Lodge #138, Lexington American Legion Auxiliary Unit 6 and the Tanglewood Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed bowling, farming, raising cattle and hay.
Fred was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine H. Rhodes on May 30, 1985; his parents; step daughter, Margo Maddux; five brothers, Dewey L., Densel M., Alton L., Ralph J. and William C. Rhodes and a sister, Claudie B. Rhodes.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Minna Belle “Coots” Rhodes of Tanglewood; son, Fred L. Rhodes, Jr. and wife Tonya of Lexington; two daughters, Vicki Hodges and husband David, Sr., of Lexington and Miki Elliott and husband Hal of Lexington; six grandchildren, Kristina Lynn Hodges and spouse Leah, David Mark Hodges, Jr. and wife Karen, Heather Jo Rhodes and husband Daniel, Stephanie Diane Rhodes, Rick Elliott and wife Amber and Mathew Rhodes Elliott and wife Erin; and 10 great-grandchildren, Khristian Boettcher, Ryan Garrison, Clay Boettcher, Ty Garrison, Macie Garrison, Molly Hodges, Hawkins Hodges, Camellia Hodges, Nolan Elliott and Lila Elliott.
Pallbearers are, David Hodges, Jr., Rick Elliott, Mathew Elliott, Kristina Hodges, Ryan Garrison, Clay Boettcher, Ty Garrison, Craig Mostyn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lexington United Methodist Church, Lexington Masonic Lodge, Lexington American Legion or to a charity of givers choice.
