Martin was born November 22, 1814, in Union Co (formerly Campbell Co) TN. His father Enoch was farmer and ran a mill. Although Martin's schooling ended when he was fourteen, he studied and became a teacher, surveyor, mathematician, and was known for his poetry. He is known as the "Bard of Lone Jack." He was also interested in politics. When the Republican party was formed in 1856, he joined. He later was unique in being the only one to vote for Abraham Lincoln in Cass Co. His obituary states, "Mr. Rice was fond of telling of the times, in 1833, when 'the stars fell.'" He published two volumes of poetry. - Frances Miers Muller (Blusummit on Find A Grave) Added: Feb. 19, 2008
