Henry, born in 1857, was the son of Samuel Rice and Fanny Starr. He married Charlotte Carter in 1880 in St. Marys, Ontario.[1]
Junior schoolmaster turned President of the Carter Milling Company, working for his father-in-law's company... "by 1905, following some untimely family deaths, Rice was the sole surviving partner in the Carter milling enterprise...The company owned rights to the Thames River from Queen Street to beyond the Sarnia Bridge. In 1908, Rice built the weir, or dam, creating a lake beside the Flats to control water power to his mill... his was a volatile business and his good fortune did not last."[2]
"St. Marys citizens were shocked to learn that Mr. H.L. Rice, one of the town’s prominent and highly-esteemed businessmen, was the victim of an accident near Woodstock, while returning home by the CPR from a business trip to Toronto. Mr. Rice had been in the dining car and, while crossing the passage between the cars, he slipped and was thrown off the train. He had lain beside the tracks until the next morning, whe he was found by a freight crew and taken to the Woodstock Hospital. No bones were broken but he suffered most from the cold."[3]
