Biography

Margaret Rice was born about 1757, possibly in Hamilton, Northampton County, PA. [1] She was the daughter of Jacob Reiss/Rice and Catherina (Mueller) Rice. [2]

Margaret’s sisters married brothers -- Cattrean married Jacob Teeter, and Christina married Peter Teeter. When Christina died, leaving two children, Margaret became the wife of Peter Teeter. Based on the birth of a daughter in June 1780, they probably married in the fall of 1779. [3] Researcher Linda Bloom Rossi added the following:

Around the time of the birth of Peter’s and Margaret’s second child in 1783, Margaret’s mother died and was buried at Stillwater. In less than eight years, during which time the Revolution had run full course, Margaret had lost her mother, her sister, and a brother. And by about this same time, Peter had lost his father and a brother. [4]

Peter and Margaret had a daughter baptized at Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey in October 1787. [5] After that, they seem to disappear from the Sussex County records.

On February 23, 1795, Peter bought land in today’s Lansing, Tompkins County, NY. [6] Records indicate the family was there as early as the fall of 1796. [7]

Peter and Margaret lived out their lives in Lansing. Their children were: Christina, married John Collins; Elias P., married Christiana Neuman and Prudence Knapp; Anna Maria (Polly), married Henry Snyder; Rachel, married Anthony Carter; Sally, married James T. Morgan; Peter, married Hannah Lee; and John, who died after 1832. In December 1803, Peter and Margaret had their last child, Margaretha, named after her mother. She was baptized at home and died a few weeks later. [8]

Peter died in 1832. Among other stipulations, the house and farm were to go to his son Peter, and his mother was to live there the remainder of her days. [9] Margaret lived another fifteen years.

Margaret (Rice) Teeter is buried in Asbury Methodist-Episcopal Church Cemetery in Lansing, Tompkins County, New York. Although cemetery records give her death as May 10, 1847, her tombstone reads: “MARGARET Wife of PETER TETER died Mar. 10, 1847 In the 91 Year of her age.” [10] [11]
