Biography

Jesse was born in 1838.[1] He is the son of Jeremiah Rice and Polly Unknown.[2] . He married a widow Sarah (Rose) Buckner in 1864. She appears to have been a good bit older than him, but both their ages vary from census to census.

Research Notes

In the 1870 census, his household is listed as

Name Sex Age Birthplace
Jesse Rice Male 32 Kentucky
Sarah Rice Female 46 Tennessee
Malinda F Buckner Female 15 Kentucky
Lydia M Buckner Female 10 Kentucky

This shows that Jesse's marriage in the Carter Co. records was indeed to the widow Sarah (Rose) Buckner, who we know was born in Tennessee around 1823/4 from the 1850 census, when she was with James Buckner. The presence of James and Sarah Buckner's children in the household helps confirm this.

The below book is wrong in at least one case. Thomas Rice is not the son of Houston Riley. His father and mother was not married. He is my grandfather. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.kykinfolk.com/perry/JeremiahRiceFGS.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwidldurvPvcAhXj1IMKHUiTDQoQFjABegQICBAB&usg=AOvVaw1nsXVhoDCVYFhub2uLx9of

This is a mistranscription in the FamilySearch version of the 1850 census. His name is actually Jesse Rice.
