BARBARA RICE was the daughter of Henry Rice and his 1st wife Martha (_____).[1]
Barbara was born, likely at Warwick, on 4 November 1740.[2] She died at Freetown on 14 April 1823, widow, in her 82nd year.[3]
She was called “Barbary Rice of Warwick” in her marriage intentions published at Freetown on 2 December 1763. Her husband was John Paine. His grandfather, also named John Pain, left him a quarter of his homestead farm in Freetown and made him executor of his will (made 5 Feb. 1763; proved 6 May 1766).“"
John Pain 2"“ served at least one short enlistment in the local militia during the Revolution, marching to Warren, RI, on alarm in August 17801 but otherwise lived a quiet life farming the family land.[4]
Barbara received $100 in her father’s will.[5] By the provisions of that will, “John Pain of Freetown, yeoman,” on behalf of his wife, on 8 March 1801 joined with his wife's other Rice family members in setting up care for Barbara’s younger sister Elizabeth (Rice) Mellone who was a blind widow.[6]
