Mrs. Nancy Lesher died of paralysis. Nancy Rice was born near Batavia, New York, January 4, 1818, where most of her early life was spent.[1] She was thrice married. Her first husband’s name was William Nottingham. They moved from New York to Michigan about 1843. [2] and to this union eight children were born:
A few years after the death of Mr. Nottingham, she was again led to the altar by a Seth Townsend. One child was the result of this marriage, Mrs. Ella Davison of New York, who was at her mother’s bedside during the closing hours as was also a granddaughter, Minnie Campbell, daughter of Sarah Nottingham, who has lived with her for years. Mr. Townsend died, and her marriage to the late John Lesher occurred at Prairieville, Michigan. October 20th, 1865. They immediately came to Independence, where she has since resided.[3] Mr. Lesher died March 26, 1888.
Mrs. Lesher leaves three brothers – William H. Rice, of Milwaukee, Noel Rice, of Homer, Michigan and Charles Willard Rice, of Chicago. She was a lifelong and consistent member of the M. E. church, from which place the funeral occurred, Sunday afternoon, Rev. Pye officiating. Nancy is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Washington, Buchanan, Iowa, USA.[4]
