Robert L. Rice, Jr., 65, of Newton Township, died Monday, November 29, 2004[1] in Battle Creek. Robert was born February 6, 1939, in Battle Creek, the son of Robert L. Rice, Sr.and Mary L. Hagelshaw. [2] He was a 1957 graduate of Marshall High School[3] and attended Michigan State University in their Agricultural program and has been a farmer most of his adult life. Robert had also owned and operated the Rice Speed Shop. He enjoyed car racing, drag racing at Martin Speedway and NASCAR. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Marshall Moose Lodge and had served as a volunteer firefighter with the Newton Fire Department for 20 years . He is survived by his wife, his mother, Mary L. Hagelshaw of Newton Township; two sons, a daughter, 3 step-children, six grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild; brother and sister. Robert is buried in Newton Cemetery, Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan. [4]
